Hi,
Hope someone can point me in the right direction of what to do next, or at least what to ask.
Over the past few months I have been exhibiting the following symptoms -
Feeling REALLY thirsty even though I have not done much excercise, and only drinking a lot of something like Coke or Sprite seems to fix it.
Urinating a lot more than usual
Feeling really really out energy (I am usually a very active person - my job is quite physical and I do martial arts twice a week) for no reason
Slight muscle type aches in my lower legs and feet on occasions
This started to bother me and after looking round on various medical sites it looked like they match the symptoms to Diabetes. I went for a urine test today and they told me this evening that the results have come back negative.
I find this really surprising as these symptoms are very very persistant and I cant really think what else it would be!
I am booked in to see the doctor, but I just want to know what to ask them.
Is the urine test foolproof or can it show negative even though there is a problem? Bear in mind that the sample was given at 9am having not eaten since 7pm the previous night and a lot of water was consumed in the time before.
Thanks in advance :)

Urine tests are not generally used in the diagnois of diabetes. They generally do a fasting blood glucose count. As for your next step, see your doctor and discuss your symptoms.

hi silentghost and welcome to df! forget testing urine-an fbs and a1c are what you need. b4 you see the dr. fast for at least 8 hrs.-in case the dr. does the blood test right then and there...the fbs will show what your blood sugar is and the a1c will show what it;s been for the past 2-3 months..... just explain your symptoms ...if the dr. ignores you-find another dr! take care, trish

Your symtoms say diabetes. Only you doc can tell for sure.

Meanwhile, you can go to any drugstore and buy a glucose meter (get a simple one, maybe a One Touch UltraMini) and some test strips. Check your glucose before eating in the morning, before meals and two hours after meals.
If you take that info to your doctor, you will be one step ahead of the game.
Make sure you "calibrate" the meter to match the number on the test-strip container. Very easy to do...just read the directions.
Good luck!

Normaly if you are an undiagnosed diabetic you would be loosing a lot of weight. Have you noticed any of that because that mite help to a diagnosis:)

Thanks for all the replies :)
I have been to the doctor this morning, he does agree that the symptoms sound like diabetes, and he is asking me to do a "fasting blood test" which I am having done tomorrow morning. He said he is not limiting it to glucose testing but also checking thyroid functions as well due to the fact I feel tired and lethargic most of the time as well.
Hopefully I should know more by close of business tomorrow...

Did he test you on the spot too? Generally if you feel all these symptoms you have constantly high BGs, not just high fastings.

They dont do on the spot testing at my surgary apprently for some reason. Bit of a shame as it would be nice to know at least if preliminarily it was high but I guess I should know by tomorrow afternoon anyway.

Hello,
Im in exactly the same situation. My symptoms are persistent and include:
-Having to urinate more often, sometimes having to get up 4 or 5 times a night!
-Excessive thirst, although this is a milder one
-Recurring thrush infection (yeah, it sucks)
-Dizziness
-Confusion
-Fatigue
-Weight loss (and im already stick thin:( )
-Blurred vision...only on one occasion has this been really serious though, about 2 months ago, to the point where i couldnt see
Then there are some things which im unsure are related or could be
-I have these brown/tan patches on my skin, on my chest, neck and back, although these have been there for a few years or so and ave just got worse
-My hair is thinning
-Im irritable
-My stomch is SO bloated...really round and hard and firm, like a pot belly
-I get this pain at the top of my abdomen...from research it looks like this pain is near where the pancreas is
-Periods are now more spaced out. Its no longer a 28 day cycle but more like 40-45 days
-I look pale
-Im constantly craving sweet food even though it does all that to me!
Im 19 years old, and this has been going on for about 5 months now. It improves when i eat less sugary foods. The doctors have so far ignored me but i have another appointment at 2.30 today
Anyway im so sorry, didnt mean to try and hijack the thread, im just so scared.
Good luck, and i really really hope you find the answers

I'd get to another doctor right away. You have a problem and it may be diabetes, it may be other things. Insist on a blood test.

Whether you truly have diabetes or not, act for now as if you do. Exercise as much as you can, increase your water intake, watch your carbs, esp breads, pastas, rice, potatoes...instead, eat a lot of salads, green veggies (fresh or frozen), chicken, tuna, grilled seafood and lean meats. Avoid sugar, eating s/f puddings or jello for dessert. If, in 2 weeks you learn you aren't diabetic, you won't be out anything buy 2 weeks of healthy living. It's a win-win situation.
Let us know your results.

Do you know any diabetics? Maybe you could teat your blood sugar a couple of different times. If you're below 100, then it more likely something else, if you are 200, then more likely you are. If you get a really high reading, I'd let the doctor know right away

Go too the emergency room you could have addison's disease with all those symptoms especially the dark brown skin patches.
Very few Drs see addison's disease so mention it to them.
It is a life threat and needs to be treated very quickly.
