i have no insurance, age 42, approx 125 pounds overweight, dx with type 2 1998. i have been on glucophage and glucotrol from 1998 thru 2003. When i have lost weight i didnt need any meds but now im up there again. Just tested my sugar and im 275 during the day after eating with no meds for diabetes. The oral meds i was on did not work anymore. If you were my doctor what would you put me on and what suplements. I take fish oil,co Q 10, baby aspirin. Im thinking about getting lantus. Im going to see a internist and with input here we will see what happens.

Your doctor will probably put you back on metformin to start, maybe something else as well. A lot of docs won't put type 2s on insulin because they think you won't go for the shots... if you are controlled with the pills, that's the way to go.
Since you have no insurance, you can go to Wal-Mart and get your generic scripts there for $4 each. (Though there are limits to that program, check Wal-Mart's website and take the list with you to the doctor.)
The other thing the doctor might tell you is to lose weight and see a nutritionist, or go on a lower carb diet. This may save you money as well.

i was thinking of going on lantus thru the patient assistance program and get it free. Is it possible the oral meds are not going to work anymore as my cells are burnt out.

That pretty much says it all, doesn't it?
Good Luck.

I would give you a magic pill that would make you lose 130lbs if I was your Dr.

If you don't want to have another medication, perhaps it's time to start exercising again and also following a lower carb diet.
I have noticed that exercise is especially crucial to my blood sugar control...if I go a few days with no exercise, my blood sugars start to rise again.
If you lose weight and are eating right and STILL have #'s that are too high, it may be time for insulin.

I agree that the long term remedy is exercise and diet. But you probably should take something for a month or two to help you along.
