...which to be fair won't rule many people out :)

I've picked up a few minor bugs lately; nothing desperate, just the little viral things that come and go. As we all know, anything like this tends to push the BG numbers up. My understanding is that the liver tries to be kind and pushes out extra glucose to help fight the infection but that's rather unhelpful to the likes of us.

I obviously increase my insulin intake to counter the BG whilst I'm unwell and check often. I only ever raise my rapid insulin (not savvy enough to alter the basal when I'm not feeling well) and mostly cope OK.

The last 3 occasions I've had something like this, the days following the bug will result in me going hypo far more than expected; it's almost as if my carb to insulin ratio changes in favour of the insulin for a few days and my basal insulin requirement drops.

I have no scientific proof for this, it just seems to have happened fairly consistantly over the last 3 times I've picked up minor bugs; after several days of higher numbers, I'll get several days of hypos despite putting my insulin levels back to where they normally sit.

Today, I've had 5 hypos. Not bad ones, and a couple were just drifting into a minor low at times when there shouldn't have been any Apidra working. It's almost as if my basal has drifted off. I just don't have the time to do a fasting test at the moment (work and home life even busier than usual), and on top of that I know it will come right again in a couple of days. At all other times, my basal is spot on and whilst I do go hypo I can usually put it down to me miscounting the carbs or unusual physical activity. It drives me nuts when it happens like this without me knowing why.

Does this happen to anyone else, and can someone give me a reason why this may be happening? Or am I spotting a pattern where none exists?

Sounds like your liver is taking a break from all the extra work it did, when you were sick....makes sense to me...

All depends on which part of the body or endocrine system is afflicted by the viral infestation. A virus will normally attack the weakest area of the body. Because of the constant battle in the endocrine system symptoms can vary dramatically.

Could be that the repair process following your infection uses up glucose - I don't know for definite but I'm speculating that if there's a lot of cell repair going on, that requires energy, and the energy needed probably comes from glucose.

I guess so, but the kind of infections I'm talking about are really minor. This last one had my daughter throwing up for a couple of days. My wife and I got it to a far lesser degree (or we got something else, how can you tell?), but in us we just felt really nauseous. We didn't actually go through with the throwing up. In me, high BG for the duration of feeling poorly, loads of hypos the day I felt better. Really strange.
