First heard about him in the early '70s. Funny thing about ideas and how they keep getting rediscovered. No, he was not the first with that idea and he will not be the last. There are also variations on the idea with others claiming it to be their own idea.

Was this the guy behind the "Atkins diet" the same one whom died from being an obese pie eating dude with heart desease?.

Atkins died from slipping and hitting his head on the pavement, causing severe brain injury. He was given numerous intravenous fluids during the course of trying to save his life. These caused him to retain water and weigh a lot when he died. Before his fall, he was not obese.

He had had a heart attack previously which was caused by cardiomyopathy, a heart condition brought on by a virus. He developed the condition three years before his death.

Just to set the record straight. Some of his ideas (Harold's right, they have been around a long time, even before Atkins) fit well with some of Bernstein's. Both of these men have helped me with my personal diabetes control.

Maybe I was getting this guy mixed up with L. Ron Hubbard.

Atkins & Bernstein's approach to dieting has helped me tremendously as well. I do not eat as low carb as Atkins suggests in his induction phase but my body repsonds better to protein vs. carbs. I recently came across an Atkins book that I had never seen before (I had only seen his diet books). This one is: Atkins Diabetes Revolution.
