A visit from my local paramedics

Well this afternoo I woke up with two very nice paramedics in my living room who had once again saved my life from a massive hypo. I was completely unconcious and fitting. BM of 0.8. that was really close. I can't thank those two guys enough for their time and skills.

Now I feel totally burnt out and I can only just stand up. My entire body hurts, I am still shaking, me head feels weird and I just feel generally fooked.

The paramedics asked me why I had been given any anti nausea drugs. I just sat and looked at and said I have no idea. Looks like I am gonna have to go and scream at the doctors once again to get the medicine I need.

Now I am sat here worried about another hypo because I know from experiance that the instability of a very serious low can have side effects on the bg.

Not a good really but I am alive.

My partner Lisa has been with me all day and has a long weekend off work til next Wednesday so I should be OK. Lisa was the one whom called the paramedics when she couldn't get the glucogel down my throat.

I must have lost about 4 pints of fluid. Just trying to rehydrate myself right now.

I just didn't feel right this morning, but all my bg's were fine. Feeling sick(nothing new there) I decided to have a nap at around 12pm I think it was. Thats when it all went wrong.

So sorry to hear about your terrible time. You sound like the ideal candidate for a CGMS.

Has your physician been able to get to the bottom of your nausea? I feel nauseated when my sugar gets too low, that's one of the signs I watch for. It was confusing during my pregnancies for the first few months. Geez, you're not pregnant are you :eek: .:D ?

Glad you are ok. I had a hypo scare today, also. Not anything close to yours, but scary for me. I'm glad someone was there with you, take care.

Really sorry to hear that. That is one scary low number.

I've never heard of anti-emetics affecting blood glucose in this way, so I'm interested in your paramedic's comment regarding this. I had no idea that this could happen. Then again my brother (type 1 for many years) had a steroid injection for frozen shoulder a few years back and his BG rocketed. On further enquiry, this was aparantly a known side effect :(

As pharmacists tend to be a much better bet than GP's as far as drug effects, contraindications etc. go, do you have a decent local pharmacist that you can ask? For that matter, the leaflet in with the nausea drugs should say that people with diabetes should steer clear if they have this effect. If that's the case, time to complain about the doc that prescribed them without looking at contraindications...

Gary mate, I don't have anti-emetic drugs thats the problem. Not been able to eat normally from feeling ill all the time is have a knock on effect to the amount of glucose stored in my body so when I do drop it goes quick and fast. Not really a problem whilst awake. But when sleeping I just don't wake up. all my diabetic life sleeping hypo have been a problem for me.

The paramedic was asking why I don't have the anti-emetics. Not really a route I want to take and maybe thats what my doctors are thinking. They are not always keen giving drugs unless its absolutely necessary.

Maybe all the budget was used up on my acupuncture:T :)

Ah OK, that makes sense now. Not a nice situation to be in. Do hope you're on the mend soon.

Well, I have been told by 5 different consultants that it could be an infection in my nerves but there is no way to test for such things. Or maybe a problem with my pancreas being out of sync with the rest of my body and not doing its job properly. Still waiting for the test results for that one will be another two weeks I think. It was a test for certain protein which is released from the pancreas and passed straight thru the digestive tract and is found in the stools.
Won't be til October when I finally get all the results.

Well, I sure hope they can find a way to help you soon Rich... I presume they have tried giving you pancreatic enzymes (prescribed strenght, not over the counter ones) ?
