The world is full of ignorant people. You can't really change that even if it does sometimes make us bonkers.

My friends know. As a result, they are less ignorant than they were before. Wanna know why? They actually cared to learn and listen. If they didn't, I don't see why I would want to be friends with someone like that.

It would be ironic if there were two diabetic friends that didn't know each other were, well, diabetic...

I have found it a very quick way to figure out who isn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier...

I could care less who knows I have diabetes. I have it. Its a fact of life and quite frankly, if I talk about it the people around me will be more educated on the subject. There IS a difference between being ignorant and being uneducated.

I was told yesterday by a nurse at the hospital that I looked "very healthy" for a diabetic. :T

My blood sugar was 245 by the time I arrived for surgery. This same nurse called the anesthesiologist to see what he wanted to do. I was allowed to keep my pump on and decide on my own bolus and correct. Kept my pump on during surgery.

I tell everyone I meet...I usually start with a subtle opener like...

"Hi there, I have diabetes...can I borrow 50 cents to buy a donut?"

or...

"Hey there .... I'm a diabetic....are you going to finish those french fries?"

Actually, I've tested people too, telling them "I usually take 500mg of NPH" and see if they pretend to know what I'm taking about or if they look at me confused.

Since I got one of the glow in the dark wristbands from Tony, everyone at work and all my customers know I'm diabetic. It doesnt get me extra in tips, but it does get people talking. Many times a day I hear "My father/mother/brother/sister/co-worker/husband/wife, (etc ad-infinitum) also has diabetes/dibeetus." usually followed by questions about the treatment I'm using. One of my coworkers even works at a D clinic in Tacoma. I shamelessly started begging for supplies today.

This was actually kind of funny... When it became clear to my boyfriend's mother that I was going to be around for a while...

"... can people with diabetes have children?"

His response was great tho...
"Yes, of course, but my interests in her go beyond her ability to breed."

Oh gosh! Try telling someone you had a transplant. "Oh My God, you had it so bad you were dying????". Uh, well. no...

and my favorite. "can you eat <insert dessert here> now?".

I've always been able to eat what ever thehell I want. It might not be good for me but then it's not good for anyone now is it?

but again like i said before, it's not really ignorance if they haven't been educated. So I edumacate them and they quit bugging me about it. ;)

Yes it is, the word ignorant means lacking knowledge or education. ;)

parrotletzoo

Ignorance

Ignorance, has more to do with not paying attention to something which could be paid attention to...its root word is ignore. To ignore something has little to do with the ability to understand it. Therefore, the opposite of ignorance isn't intelligence...its awareness.

Lack of or diminished awareness can have its roots in just not knowing about it, being trained/conditioned to not pay attention, or simply the lack of desire to know. Whatever the source...the result is the same, ignorance (even though ability may be present or may be developed). One can never understand something that one ignores.

;)

so yeah, education may not be there but is it because they've been taught and refuse to ignore it or is it because they haven't been exposed.

All I'm saying is people that haven't been taught properly shouldn't be considered stupid and I see a lot of us responding that way to comments. Try teaching instead of just getting annoyed and we might minimize the ignorance around us.

I think everyone is just having a little fun mocking those who say stuff randomly. I am sure everyone probably know about 10 things that would get comments from us just as funny. We would just be too full of ourselves to expect non diabetics to have any knowledge of the disease. It's tough enough getting professionals who should know, to actually know.

Whats funny to me is a long time diabetic who is obese, doesn't exercise and eating junk food saying they are controlling their without medicine

I told him, so do I, I just use the manual kind! Someone once hugged me, felt the infusion set, saw the tubing going into my pocket and asked "You're not gonna blow us up, are ya?" Yep, don't mess with me or I'll set my pump off . . . :D

You know, I have to give a little bit of credit to my 15 year-old... She knows I'm T1, hubby is T2. She sees the differences in our regimens as well as knows that daddy isn't going to go low, most likely, but she knows exactly where my glucagon is.

So over the summer she goes out to Atlanta to visit with her biological father. He lives with his wife, their two kids, his mother and his best friend...lots of people in that house, especially when my two oldest go there for the summers (my son is not his bio child, but he treats him like he is so he gets to go too). Anyhow, her grandma was recently diagnosed as T2.

My daughter asked her what her treatment plan was, and would she like Tani to make her anything special while she was there (one of Tani's duties is to cook 3 times a week while there). Her grandmother said no, that she was doing just fine on her pills...as she's eating a chocolate cake that's probably 4 times the serving size it's supposed to be. Tani was floored. (Now remember that this child is only 15, and really hasn't learned tact for some unknown reason...) She asks her grandma what her bg was before eating that piece of cake, and grandma said, "Somewhere around 350..." Tani told her that really wasn't good, and that she really shouldn't be having that cake because it would cause her to spike higher, etc.

So, it's not just non-Ds who are ignorant about diabetes. It's also those who are diabetic and don't care.

But if you think about it I don't know much about multiple sclorosis, or some of the other diseases. if the disease doesn't touch you or an immediate member of your family there are not many people who are going to learn all about it....my own son who is 16 and is just so used to hearing me say i don't feel good because i kept my sugars so high for so long doesn't have any idea how many times I have almost died nor does he care. I think as human beings we have so much on our plate that we just listen to bits and pieces of things people tell us and if it doesn't affect us we have no reason to research it. Also alot of people after explaining what happened to them find its just easier to say oh its from my diabetes so they don't really have to go into long explanations. But I am still laughing over the contagious one i think i would have said oh my yes thats why i have to quit work but i wanted you to have this and pick up something off my desk and then accidentally cough on it.....then whisper oh don't worry it's sexually transmitted LMAO:T

But, when I am talking to someone else and, in conversation, it comes up that they have cancer, MS, or a heart disease...I don't automatically ask "Do you take Shots?" or, even more rude "Do you have to Shoot UP?"..."Is it OK if you eat THAT?"...I do feel diabetics are subject to more myths and old-wives tales about their disease.

It would be like me asking a cancer patient..."Do you take Chemo"?...I would never, ever ask that question.

Well reading all these replies makes it sound like us good old diabetics are actually having a laugh at other peoples rudeness, ignorence and uneducatedness.

I have good fun by telling people things, if they ask a stupid question like "Are you allowed to eat that?" I will say something like "No, but am going to anyway" and that makes them really confused lol

It does annoy me when I pick up one little sweet thing and someone has to say something, we are old enough to look after ourselves.

Asking if we are allowed to eat something is the same as someone who smokes or drinks heavy right?

DeusXM

Asking if we are allowed to eat something is the same as someone who smokes or drinks heavy right?

Actually, it's worse. Drinking and smoking heavily will always be bad for you - if you're a T1 you can quiote happily eat anything you want and it won't in itself be bad for you, unless you don't treat your condition properly.
