As many of you know, I had surgery on my foot on Friday. Friday morning, I woke up with blood sugar at 92. About an hour later I tested (worrying that I might go low) and my blood sugar was 215. I took a tiny bolus to try and drop it a bit, and tested again about forty five minutes later and was still in the 200's. Just before surgery 245. What the heck? When I got home, I tested and my blood sugar was 44. I had no clue as there was still anesthesia in my body, I guess.

Today is Saturday and my blood sugar has yet to be under 200. I have been taking corrections like crazy, but my blood sugar doesn't seem to want to budge. Any ideas?

Do they have you on any meds, Nancy? Sometimes, things like Decadron (Steroids) are used to prevent nausea & can wreak havoc on BGs. If you're not on meds, that throws that idea out the window....but, there may be other possibilities causing the highs (possibly a bad site or set?). Also, if your body is trying to heal itself, it can potentially cause elevated levels. Since each person is different, I won't speak with certainty on that.

Just some thoughts. Hope your BGs decide to come down soon! :(

Hi Nancy, you will find it is the after effects of surgery. I found increasing my basal helped no end but just keep on testing to make sure you don't run into trouble. Due to shock/injury illness your body produces extra cortisol to fight the pain cortisol is a natural steroid. Thus our blood sugars go higher when this happens. Same effect as having a shot of steroids I supose.

I will try doing a temporary basal rate for the next few days. Duh....changing my site is a good idea. I did it Thursday morning, so it is due anyhow.

I am not taking any meds yet Dewey, but they did do an IV antibiotic so that might have something to do with it.

I will do a temp basal with a new set. Thanks!!!! I can always count on you guys when my brain has gone dead. :stupido2:

Your body is under stress and stress in any form raises bg.

I don't have a clue to what I am talking about.... but I do wonder if the saline solution they pump into you does anything???? I do know that last week I gained five pounds when I had one after my low that was treated at the hospital.

It has disappeared after a week though. Back to my normal chubby self. :D

Heck Nita, If I had a clue I wouldn't have asked!! :T I have a feeling it may be the antibiotic and like funny said, maybe the stress of it all. I will always worry about infection until it heals. I am starting Keflex today, so I may just deal with this all week.

I do think I will do a basal test after this is all over. My sugar should not have gone up that dramatically when I was fasting in the morning.

Grrrrr...... there are those days that I HATE diabetes. Today is one of them.

Stress/assult on body IE surgery will cause the rise as we have all stated but as an after thought did your surgeon use any steroid in your foot? I can't remember what you had done. Sorry mind on other things at the moment.
Hope you are feeling better today.

Boy my body doesn't like being assaulted. 308 this morning. I didn't get any steriods, but I am a little afraid of infection as I can't see under the big giant wrap on my foot. I had a oseotomy on the big toe and fifth toe and bunionectomy. I have two screws in the bones below the base of the toe. I think I may take my insulin by injection for awhile and see if I get better results. This is a mess.

My backside hurts more than my foot (from sitting on it 24/7) :T

Hey Buddy.........I emailed you last night after telling my sister that your BS was running high. I know you have a doc appointment this morning, so ask him if he gave you something in the OR that is causing a rise in BS.

Last resort...........drink a frozen slushie! God, I wish I was there with you! LOL
