My diabetes was diagnosed because I had recurring thrush.
The trouble is, I've still got the thrush and some days it's pure agony. I am seeing my GP tomorrow, and I'm hoping that he'll be able to prescribe me something to keep it under control, but I was wondering if anyone else has had problems with this.
If so, has the thrush got better when your bsl was normal? I've gone from 14.2 (255) to 9.8 (176) in a week on diet alone (the 9.8 was a fasting level, so I guess after food it would be higher). My GP isn't keen to start me on medication for the diabetes, as he wants to see how well I can do on diet alone. My concern is that the thrush will keep coming back if I don't keep my bsl at a normal level, and at the moment I don't know how good I'm going to be at that!!! :whistling
I know my doctor can answer these questions for me tomorrow, but I'd like to hear from anyone who has personally experienced this.
Many thanks

I have to imagine that the thrush should get better once your sugars are lower. It can be a mean cycle though - the stress of the infection raises your b/s levels and the raised b/s levels aggravate the infection and round and round.
Some doctors are better informed and more pro-active than others. Judging from some other posts I'd say you may be in an office w/ and uninformed and passive doc and staff. You may want to consider changing - you'd be amazed at what a well-informed dr can do for you. And MAKE SURE he/she sends you to a CDE! Keep testing often and keep working at it!

The thrush should get better as you bgs lower, but it may take your period to get rid of this does completely. Boots sell a pill called Diffluctane- I think- that gets rid of it in 48 hours, although it costs about £14!!! Other than that Canesten Combi is quite good. If you want to control your diabetes without medication but are worried about the diet strenuous + regular exercise is a good idea. Theres an article about that in last months Ballance magazine.

It does get better, believe me, but if you get a flare up whip off the knicks/thongs etc. when you get home and let air get to the offending area for the night, it's amazing what a bit of coolness does to kill of those nasty bacteria.

Everyone who has answered your question is right. Another thing you can do is to eat yogurt everyday but please remember to count in your daily count. Also do not have long hot baths or use alot of bath salts as this will upset your system. :(

thanks so much for your comments - Heather I'm already eating yogurt - have been ever since the thrush started, but mine seems to be resistant to everything!! Mind you, I'm really enjoying the yogurt with fruit - it satisfies my sweet tooth quite nicely LOL
I saw my doctor this morning and he took a swab to be tested (the second one they've done) He also prescribed me a 2 week course of pessaries which I hope will sooth the pain until my b/s levels are normal.
Lorna - I bought one of those pills when I first had the thrush - couldn't believe the cost of one pill........mind you, it was enormous LOL It did help, but the d*mn thing just came back again.
The thrush is so bad that it's making it easy for me to stick to my diet to control my b/s.......I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy :whistling

In addition to what the others said, please take a look at your other meds and ask your doc if any of them could be a cause. Antibiotics are notorious for contributing to yeast problems becuase they kill all the 'good' bacteria that would normally keep them in check.
