Question on A1C test

So I'm going in to get my A1C tested for the first time since diagnosis..

The little sheet they gave me said to fast, but it also said not to take diabetes medications... hmmm... does this mean I shouldn't take Lantus the night before?... I'll ask my dr., but how would y'all interpret that?

That is a great question - as soon as you get your answer from your doc. please post as I will be getting my 1st blood work since dx in a week or so.

You must be getting more than just an A1C. There's no need to fast during an A1C. Are you sure they didn't add a cholestrol test on there as well? Either way, you still take your insulin. If you don't, then you won't be having an enjoyable day the next day.

ya must be having other blood work done...an a1c measures glucose for the last 2-3 months...i can't imagine why they'd tell you not to take your meds....unless they're doing an fbs [fasting blood sugar]...but you test in the mornings and don't skip your meds.... check with your dr-and let us know! trish

Definately take your Lantus! I've never skipped my insulin for any blood tests. Of course, ask your doc, but as far as I'm concerned, insulin's a hormone, not a medicine. Hmmmmm, I wonder if I'm the only one that thinks this way?:) Good luck with the A1c!

fasting - this is so they can get an accurate cholesterol and triglyceride level.

not taking diabetes medication - this is general advice for all diabetics to prevent them going hypo in the morning - it means don't take medication that might make you go hypoglycemic if you don't eat.

You need to take your lantus. This is your basal. if you don't your BG will soar by morning, and you won't catch up until evening. If you have a pronounced Dawn phenomenon then you might actually have to take your fast acting to keep your BG down, even if you haven't eaten anything - test on the morning and see what happens, then you'll know for next time.

Yes take your Lantus.
If you don't the blood test would not reflect your true fasting blood sugar.
Insulin keeps you alive so you must not skip it.
