Hey everyone!
I have a bit of a complex situation on my hands and i was wondering about other peoples experience with low blood sugars. I am 7 weeks pregnant and I have switched over to using insulin instead of regular medicaitons because my regular meds weren't approved for pregnancy. I am currently on 12 units of lantus in the morning and 8 units in the evening along with 3 units of humalog with my meals. I have found on a few occasions that I will be around 45 1hr after eating so I will eat 15g of carbs and then 2 hrs after first eating I will be around 55 and then suddenly 3 or more hours later I have shot up around 180 (very bad because my obgyn has told me not to be above 120 2 hrs after meals). I know with my last pregnancy I used humlin R and I had good control over my sugars. Could it be the difference in insulin or am I doing something wrong? Any advice on how to manage lows without going to high? Thanks for the help!

You mention 3 units of Humalog with your meals. Humalog is normally taken in a ratio-to-carbs amount which varies from person to person. For instance, I do pretty well with 1 unit of Humalog for every 15 carbs. Some do 1/10, 1/20, etc.

Or, are you eating exactly the same number of carbs each meal (very difficult to do...if you're used to the flexibility of Humalog)...to match the 3 units.

Yes, Humalog is much quicker acting than Humulin R. Your blood glucose is dropping one hour after eating because of the concentrated peak action at around 1 hour. And your blood glucose is rising after 3 hours because most of the Humalog action is finished. Switching to Humulin R should improve your control. It's action is less intense but spread over a much longer period. You may find that you only need to do this in the morning, when you are probably more insulin resistant. Good luck!
