I'm taking Glucovance (glyburide+metformin) 3x daily for T2 and Vasotec 20mg 1x daily for high BP.
My total cholesterol is high (210) and triglycerides also high and LDL high.
My doc wants me on Omacor for the chol and tri. Instead, I have begun taking 3 fish oil capsules per day.
Will the fish oil work ok instead of the prescription med?
I'd like to gain a little weight (5 to 10 lbs). How can I add some calories without increasing blood sugar and cholesterol?
THANKS!

A lot of evidence point to the idea that processed grains lead to high cholesterol and lean meat will lower it. Going with a lower carb/ better carb diet will help

I was told that simply taking "fish oil" (which contains Omega 3's) is NOT the same (not as good) as taking the Rx Omacor. Also, all fish oils are NOT the same I am told.

I, too, have heard that the "prescription" fish oil is better, but so far, i'm doing fine on the over-the-counter kind.

Why don't you try with your Endo's blessing of course NIALOR.
Here is a link.
NIALOR - Guaranteed to Improve your Triglycerides (http://www.arizonapharmaceuticals.com/Triglycerides.html)
I'm wanting to try this stuff to raise my HDL.
I was put on Lovaza (fish oil) which was formerly Omacor one month ago to lower my cholesterol because my liver does not tolerate statins. I find that it is sooo expensive. I told my PA that and she did say you could try OTC fish oil but it would have that fishy after taste and belching.
I really wonder if OTC does the job? Actually it says to lower triglycerides and mine are o.k. It's just that the total cholesterol is about 220 and the LDL is a mite high ... 110. If it is for triglycerides why are they using this for cholesterol?
Has OTC worked for anyone?? Actually I don't know if the Lovaza has worked yet as I haven't been retested.
Thanks Nita

I take the "Vitamin-World" brand fish oil tablets. My initial HDL was low 20's...doc said it needed to be 50 or more....in 3 months, it was at 46, last was 48. LDL has also lowered now by 30 points. Total cholesterol is in the 160's.
The doc told me exercise, fish oil and red wine would go a long way in helping with the HDL.

Just my 2 cents worth. Hubbys Dr. told him any cold pressed (extracted to keep oil chilled) deep water fish oil is the kind that does the trick. I get hubbys capsules off the internet and they arrive in an insulated container so they dont over heat during shipping. Ive seen similar oil at the local Whole Foods in their cooler. Plus there is the To Burp or Not To Burp question and you can get the capsules enteric coated to reduce fishy burps.
