The following was published in the September issue of Men's Health Magazine and I found it quite worrisome.
"High blood sugars can damage sperm and boost the odds of birth defects, states an Irish Study. Scientists analysed men with type-1 diabetes and found that their sperm had 20 percent more mutations than did the swimmers of healthy men. High glucose levels are associated with oxidative stress, which damages your DNA, say the study authors. This also raises the risk of your offspring having health complications, such as leukemia."
Anyone know any more details about this. Since i've been diabetic (6 Years) my blood sugars have been less than perfect and my spouse and I have been thinking about making a baby soon.
Other than having perfect blood sugars is there anything else that can be done to reverse or reduce the damage thats been done...? And is the damage done to sperm and/or DNA permanent or can it be reversed??
I just want a healthy baby really, this is what its all about!
I would search this myself but I'm at the office right now for the next 7 hours.

How long do sperm cells live inside a male if not ejaculated? I forget, 90 days? Assuming your blood sugars were under good control those 90 days, my simple math says you can fix yourself in 3 months. However, there are probably other factors to consider as well...

Yea, if thats the case that wouldn't be too bad. I'm just worried about the DNA part. They didn't specify whether it damages your body's DNA or your sperms' DNA.
Common sense would lead me to believe it damages sperm DNA but can anyone confirm this...

I couldn't find the lifespan in the male human body, the lifespan in the female is about 5-7 days. However, it takes 90 days to for a sperm to reach maturity. So those 90 days are the most crutial part of control in order to have a healthy child.

So my simple thinking would be to make sure you are under control at least six months to ensure any potential "outliers" are long gone and dead...
I wonder if there still needs to be a larger buffer though for other systems to regenerate/recover, etc...

I'm not sure "fix" is quite the best word to use in this context...
Given that the quote from the article attributes the increase risk of mutation to increased oxidative stress, I would suspect that, in addition to good diabetic control, you could also improve the odds with increased antioxidant intake.

yeah I read it - Men's Health is one of my favourite magazines...
anyway I think instead of Mens Health you should read this instead...

without going into details the mens health article bigs up the study, and is factually incorrect.

Here you go...
Sperm Cycle
Old sperm cells die off and new cells are created at a rate of about one percent each day. This means the entire sperm cycle requires approximately 100 days. The final 75 days represent a period of maturation for the sperm cell. This final step of sperm maturation, called "spermiogenesis", puts the fuel into the tank and completes the development of the sperm cell (spermatozoon).
During this 75 day period of maturation, sperm require large amounts of energy to fuel the mid-portion of the cell. Cells that consume large amounts of energy often generate many free radicals. Here, these free radicals represent a form of oxidative stress on the tissues and organs responsible for the reproductive function in the male. Thus it is useful to use dietary supplements with the proper antioxidants and metabolic co-factors that may help to reduce these stresses.
Proceptin is a proprietary formulation of nutritional supplements of fat and water soluble antioxidants, amino acid precursors and co-factors related to intermediary metabolism. It has the ability to provide these nutrients required to support successful male reproductive function.
