I did one last week but I don't have the results. I was just wondering if anyone else had done it and what they thought.
Thanks,
M

I've done it twice this year. I ordered both times from flexsite.com. My Dr. told me they're a very reliable way of keeping track of your A1C. I'm due to recheck in Nov. & will be ordering from them again.

I used to use the A1C Now at home kit. Did not think they were very accurate. You're talking about mail-in versions though right? I haven't tried those. Maybe I'll check it out. I'd like to do one a month if possible, but that's too much to go to the lab.

Yes - I did the mail in thing.
Seltaeb - how long does it take to get the results? I mailed mine last Saturday. I was hoping to have the results by now.
Thanks,
M

Can anyone explain my A1c numbers? I went to the Dr. today and my A1c was 6.3. He said he wanted to see me again in 3 months and if diet and exercise did not lower this number he would start me on meds.

Patricia52, et al.,
Answer to the thread question: Yes, I'm using the Biosafe home test. They take about 15 days to get the results back and I have done these on the same days a lab tests and gotten the exact same results.
Response to Patricia: Your 6.3% result is just a bit below the upper level before you are declared "Diabetic" which is 6.5%. As a fellow Pre-D the recommendation for working on diet and exercise before taking medications is prudent. The medications for Diabetes do have some serious side effects that you don't want if you don't have to have them.
You may want to get a fasting C-Peptide test to determine if you are insulin resistant (high fasting C-Peptide) or becoming Type 1.5 (low fasting C-Peptide).
I also highly recommend reading Know Your Numbers: Outlive Your Diabetes by Jackson & Tenderich. This puts the Pre-D diagnosis in a larger context.
Background: Since the time when the Pre-D diagnosis was established, it has swept up a whole bunch of 50+ people who may, or may not, be predestined to become diabetic. A close friend went through the torutures of the ****ed until his Fasting C-Peptide proved that he was in the early stages of Type 1.5 onset. This condition takes more than one test to diagnose.

It takes from 12-14 days to get the results. Cost is $19.95 for the kit.
