Hello,
I don't know if I have diabetes, but I am worried that I may. My father and his mother are both diabetics.
Whenever I drink orange juice I start to sweat (unless it's the 'Low Acid' type). The same thing happens when I eat Starburst fruit chews. Maybe it's something to do with citrus products...I don't know. Does anyone know whether this could be an indication of diabetes or some other weird condition? Please let me know if you have any knowledge of this type of reaction. Thanks

Oh and another thing, I don't get this problem from fresh-squeezed orange juice. My mom used to make me that all the time and I loved it :) Too bad I don't live at home anymore

When there's too much sugar in the blood, the body does everything it can to try and get it out as quickly as possible, either expelling it through the urine or (you guessed it) sweating.
I really hate to be the one to break it to you but what you've said has sent alarm bells ringing in my head. If both your father and grandmother have diabetes then unfortunately you're gentically reasonably likely to develop diabetes (though not guaranteed). The freshly-squeezed orange juice part is also a cause for concern. Firstly, freshly-made orange juice is generally slightly lower in sugar than factory-produced stuff, which means it affects your bg less which could account for the reduction in sweating. Secondly, if this is something you used to drink a while ago, it could be that the problems you are having now are a sign that you are only now developing diabetes.
The fact that you don't sweat as much when you drink low acid juice is also another indicator. I'm assuming by low acid, you mean low citric acid, which contributes to Vitamin C levels. Vitamin C can affect blood glucose levels.
Don't like having to say this, but if you've been having these sort of problem, along with a few of the following....
Tiredness
Raging thirst
Frequently urinating
Inexplicable rapid weight loss
Disorientation
...you should see a doctor as soon as possible.

Thanks for the reply Deus. I will go get it checked out ASAP.

hmm, I don't thinl the orange juice thing would be a good indicator of diabetes...
As I see it, if the sweating is related to increased blood sugar in your body, like Deus suspects, wouldn't you then have the same problem with anything else that's sweet, like chocolate for example??
Anyhow, It doesn't hurt to check it out with your doctor, especially when there's diabetes history in your family...
Good luck, fingers crosed for the good news :)

I don't seem to get the same problem from other sweets, i.e. chocolates, cakes, pies, ice cream. Oh yeah, lemonade makes me sweat too. Even if it's not diabetes (which I'm hoping!), I'd like to figure out what is causing it.

If you're not getting the same problem from other sweet products then I could quite easily have been wrong. If it's only happening with orange juice, lemonade and citrus flavour sweets then it sounds like what you previously suspected - an allergy to citric acid.

I have terrible problem with sweating during summer. Is there any other reason except high bg?

Holy Cow, I've noticed the same problem too. I just absolutely sweat my fanny off in the Summer and then when Fall and Winter roll around, I just don't sweat much at all.;)

If both your parents have diabetes they must also have blood testing kits? You could just test yourself (I think the best time for that is first thing in the morning) This would give you a better indiaction of wheher or not you have a problem.

Orange juice and lemonade make you sweat but other sweets don't?! If i were you i'd also like to figure out why its doing that, maybe an allergic reaction?

I start to sweat profusely when the insulin starts to work in the mornings perhaps because I love my fruit shakes with my vitamin mix in there.
My Shiatsu massage guy insists that it's a problem with
kidneys and/or adrenals and I believe him. If the kidneys can't get rid of the excess fluid then sweating is the next way for the body to release it. Then comes tears I believe <smile>. Shiatsu can push the pressure points on my feet and then I don't profusely sweat as much anymore thank goodness.
The feet for instance are supposed to sweat a cup of fluid /day
and as the disease progresses that sweating of the feet diminishes or goes elsewhere. Not sure how I can measure that though<smile> so not sure if mine is diminishing yet or not.
