I'm not familiar with Actos, but on their web site it said the following:
"Who should not use ACTOS?
Certain patients with heart failure should not start taking ACTOS. ACTOS should not be taken by people with active liver disease or jaundice (yellowing of the skin), people with type 1 diabetes, women who are pregnant or breast-feeding, or people who are allergic to ACTOS or any of its ingredients. ACTOS should not be used for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis (a complication of diabetes in which acids called ketones build up in the blood). "
It may be that it does the same thing that metformin does to help insulin resistance, but i'd want some definite answers from my doctor as to why he wants me to take this BEFORE I took my first dose. Many meds, however, have uses different than their original use and this may be one that has been found to be helpful for T1s as well.

I've never heard of it being given to a T1 before!! Only T2's. I'm a T2, and WAS taking Actos for about 8 months. I took myself off it. It made me gain LOTS of weight, and nothing else had changed.
If your doc is concerned that you may have insulin resistance you should be taking Metformin!! This is the common med for those with insulin resistance to be taking, not Actos! Not to mention the issues associated with heart disease and Actos. Actos is basically the same med as Avandia [the one that's been all over the news with the BAD juju attached to it!!]
I'm now on insulin, and still take the Metformin. Metformin is safe for those of us on insulin to take.
I'd question my doc if I were you. If doc don't wanna hear you .. find another doc, STRAIGHT away!!
