I've heard of diabetics wearing jewelry or carrying some sort of ID that identifies them as being diabetics. I think its time dh and I do this. Please tell me if you carry this sort of id, what you wear or carry and if there are any free or low cost sources to obtain the ID. Thanks.

Hi

I carry around an ID Card, that has a emergency contact name and number on it, details that i am a diabetic and i take insulin and if i feel ill to give me something sugery and if i'm unconscious, not to put anything in my mouth and to call an ambulance immediately.

I got mine free at the diabetes clinic, but that's in england. But i should think America's the same, i know you can have it on your driving licence. Doesn't help if you don't drive lol

I have been looking at getting a bracelet or something as i keep forgetting to take my id card when i change bags.

Unfortunately these aren't free, but the cost is not to bad heres a few links i found:

Medic Alert. I think you'd have to be playing russian roulette to go out without anything on your body or wallet that says you're diabetic....

I wear a small gold bracelet that says "diabetic" and I also carry a wallet card. Plus, I'm a pumper, so I'm hoping that would also alert someone that I have diabetes. Although, they'd probably think it was a cell phone! LOL

I'm wearing on of the new leather medic alert bracelets from LifeWear.
They are very cool as far as medic alert bracelets go. They have a leather cuff with a sterling silver id plate. Lots of room for engraving, and the plate is available in colors.
Much better than most everything I've seen. Especiall if you are the hip and trendy type.

I carry a wallet card. I am not a big jewelery wearer and with my job I may get it caught on something when I am fixing something.

For anyone with a condition that they may have an episode, a bracelet would be a good idea. Putting a card in a prominent position in your wallet would also be a good idea.

I bought a bracelet that I liked from our jeweler. I purchased a 14k gold charm and had it engraved. I knew it was the only thing I would consistantly wear.

I just finished company required first aid training. Our instructor says that all EMT and medical responders are trained to look for a wrist bracelet.
I wear one constantly indicating that I am diabetic and on insulin. Good insurance !

Yep, I wear the medic alert bracelet when I go out and I have a medical alert thingy on my new ID. it's just a little M in a box on the ID; at first they didn't even put it on there so I had to go back into the DMV and complain and they sent me another one.

I wear an SOS Talisman man's bracelet. This came in handy in July when I fell ill while at Paris France. The Doctors in emergency recognised the bracelet and open it for my details, which contained family contacts, home doctors, meds and recent surgery. A God sent to me and I wouldnt be without it

My husband is a type 1 who acts like a sloppy drunk when he gets low. Does anyone know where I can get a wallet card that says "I am not drunk, I am a diabetic" card?

I wear the gold plated medic alert chain bracelet for dressy occasions. Otherwise I wear my Road ID bracelet because it doesn't dangle so much and I work in a machine shop. I would never think of being without one! The best insurance policy you can have in terms of safety.

I wear a bracelet ID, and a pendant. both stating that I am a diabetic on insulin. Like most others I have a wallet card too that says the same thing as the other ID's with the addition of listing my medications. Better to be prepared than sorry!

If you like spicey food, I have a great vegetarian cook book titled Jump Up And Kiss Me Amazon.com: Jump Up and Kiss Me: Spicy Vegetarian Cooking: Jennifer Trainer Thompson: Books (http://www.amazon.com/Jump-Up-Kiss-Me-Vegetarian/dp/0898157617/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1212261409&sr=8-1)
It has nutritional information included with each dish and has information about ingredients that you might not be familiar with. It's not specific for diabetes but a good book anyway if you like spicey.

I found a necklace charm from N-style that I really liked and wasn't too spendy. I wear it when I am planning not to be with people who know me. Although I am type 2, I do react strangely to drugs and if Im not able to speak for myself at least it would alert them to the need to be careful.

I have always worn an ID necklace. It is on me anytime I leave the house. My current one came from American Medical ID online. They have a range of styles and prices.

The charm is about as big as a quarter but thinner, gold plated with red inlay medical symbol. The back is engraved with my Name, DIABETIC, Uses Insulin, Allergic to Penicillin and my phone number with area code. I also carry a card in my wallet with more complete information, right behind my driver's license.

I ended up buying a gold box chain for it that is 30" long. It allows the charm to hide inside my neckline. My EMT brother-in-law told me they always look. Luckily, they've never had to.

I printed a couple of business cards myself with my name, address, the fact that I'm a Type 2 and the meds I use. On the reverse side I have contact numbers for my wife and parents.

I keep one in the sunvisor of my car, one in my wallet and one with my driver's licence. Now that I have them, I'll never need them or at least that's the plan ;)

I also have one of the DF wristbands, which I wear if I'm going out at night and may end up travelling home alone.

I wear a small gold bracelet that says "diabetic" and I also carry a wallet card. Plus, I'm a pumper, so I'm hoping that would also alert someone that I have diabetes. Although, they'd probably think it was a cell phone! LOL

Karen
Pumps don't necessarily ensure that medical professionals will make the connection that you have diabetes. I've encountered plenty of medical professionals that had no experience with insulin pumps. When I had cataract surgery a few years ago I printed out instructions on how to disconnect in case of an emergency and basics on how to work the pump and I"m glad I did because my anesthesiologist had never seen one before. I've been told to turn off my cell phone when I was in the er when they were seeing my pump and been asked the "does it go into your pancreas?" by nurses.

Of course some medical professionals will know what it is. but I wouldn't count on a medical device as emergency medical ID. Especially one that most of us keep tucked away in a pocket or bra. ;)

I wear a bracelet, it's really pretty and people compliment it all the time, they think it's just a bracelet. I don't know if that's good or bad =P

I wear a pink beaded MedicAlert bracelet. It never leaves my wrist.

Mine is engraved:
Diabetes,
Insulin Pump,
Hypertension,
Allergic to PCN,
Sulfa, Iodine.

Whenever I get the urge, I order a new style since they have a ton of them. My husband wears a stainless steel one with a blue caduceus, my 4 year-old wears a stainless steel one with a raised silver caduceus.

MedicAlert send you a wallet card with your bracelet. I carry mine in my purse/wallet, dh's is in his wallet, our 4 year-old's is attached to her carseat in a stick-on business card holder. :)

I wear a Medic Alert necklace. I used to wear a bracelet, but it kept getting tangled with my watch that I wear on my left wrist. I can't stand having anything on my right arm so I didn't have a choice. Well, until I got this necklace. The only time that I take it off is when I sleep at night.

You would be amazed how stupid hospital nurses and doctors are.. I recently went to the hospital emergency room and they actually had to ask me what my insulin pump was!!!! DUH!!! I cannot believe how stupid.. like they had never seen one before..and even when admitted into the hospital for days they kept trying to give me insulin injections.. I was like.. My pump is already giving me insulin and I can bolus for myself.. SO Needless to say from now on I will wear a bracelet telling all STUPID OR IGNORANT persons that I am an insulin pump wearing diabetic...good grief, how hard is this!...I have lost all faith in human beings.....
