hi ive been pumping for a week now and im starting to feel brave and would really like to learn how to use the extended bolus options for some of my meals.
i cant seem to find any guidance on how much/how long to do this.
so how do you bolus for the following foods?
potatoes
pizza
pastry
rice
breakfast cereals
indian or chinese takeaway
obviously each food group will react differently for each person, but a general ball park/somewhere to start is helpful. thanks ;)

For everything but the chinese I pre-bolus 20-30 minutes. For chinese food I do a dual wave 80/20 for two to four hours depending on the protein & fat content. I have 2 star success with chinese :(

I use the dual wave for pizza & chinese only. I usually give 60-70% up front and the last 30-40% over a 3 to 4 hour period.

I also only dual wave for pizza and Chinese food. For me it is any food that has a high fat content. Pizza and Chinese rebound because of the fat in them. I use 2.5 hours for pizza and about 2 hours for Chinese also taking 80% up front and 20% over the next two hours.

I dual wave for Rice. Rice is killer so I try to have as little as possible...unless it's fried rice, then I give in.
Just give it a shot. Try something like a 50/50 split with the square portion going for 1 hour. See how you react to your carb count and modify anything in the future. Let us know how it goes.

thanks i will give it a try. i do fancy pizza but i dont think i can restrict myself to only one piece and im not too sure i fancy the consequences after a whole 12" one lol!
but i do like rice so i will try that tonight.
the pattern im noticing with you all is that you give quite a large chunk of the insulin right away then draw the rest out over the following couple of hours. thats useful to know. thanks :)

my pump trainer also told me that if i give a bolus larger than 5 units that i should spread it out over 15 minutes as an extended bolus. improving absorption i should think.

I use the dual wave for pizza all the time - 70/30 over 2 hrs works well for me. However, you have to experiment a bit with it to see what works for you for the different foods. I don't ever have to use anything but the normal bolus on rice and potato. Others find that those foods have different effect on them and use the alternative bolus options.
Good luck!

potatoes- normal
pizza- dual 60-75% now, rest over 3-4 hrs depending on crust thickness and how greasy it feels. Use low carb ratio than with other foods.
pastry- pre-bolus right before eating, normal
rice- yuck
breakfast cereals- normal, after I eat
indian or chinese takeaway- sqaure over 2 hrs, normal for pasta/desert type parts or other really simple carbs
