This is my second such incident since getting my pump in March. On the second day of a site rotation I notice more and more discomfort when giving each bolus. On day three when I change the site I removed the cannula (Cleo 90) and a rather large, hard lump is under the skin and tender to the touch. No redness or any usual signs of an infection, just the lump. It's not been three days since the removal and the lump is still present and still tender to the touch.

I had this one before almost near the same site a few months ago and it finally went away after a few weeks. Anyone know what causes this? Anyone ever experience this as well?

I have only had one site infection (in my thigh - last week) and it was red, painful, and swollen - all of which occured the night after I changed the site. I was lucky in that I treated it with neosporin for several days and it cleared up without having to get an antibiotic (and pay for a doctor visit).

That said, I'd wonder if you are having a reaction to the cannula from your body? But then, you'd think that it would happen no matter where your site is and not be limited to one area. I will get "pump bumps" sometimes, but those haven't been tender to the touch.

You might want to talk to your DE and see what they think.

Sorry - not much help here...hopefully someone else has some thoughts on this.

Many many factors come to mind. Although I have only been pumping for 3 months I find that it could be one of several things. First I pump about 300 units into a site over 3 days. You have to admit a person that pumps 1/10 of that will have more tolerance for the tissue not to break down. My sites start to rot out after the second day. Also my insulin absorption falls off dramatically. Do you have enough fat at the site? Second I find it common to have a "welt" sometimes when I do not place it in the fattiest place on my body. Third I am using a 9MM Canula (not spelled correctly) yours may not be the correct one for your body fat. And lastly have you experienced placing the infusion set in a place that you know is an improper site because of the lack of subcutaneous fat. I hope you are using the prep solution before insertion and using a sterile technique. From site prep to insertion et.al.. Sometimes I have had to remove a infusion set after a few hours for reasons I don’t understand. Good luck maybe someone else can be more help. All I am trying to say is XXIT happens.
