Hi, In March 2006 I had an annual checkup and my fasting came back as 102 (5.7 in Canada which is considered normal) and OGTT was 118 (6.6 in Canada). I just had more tests done recently and the numbers were 104 fasting and 113 OGTT.

My Dr. tells me these are normal numbers, but I'm concened that the fasting number is over 100. I'm 5'6", weight 125, excellent cholestorol, low blood pressure 90/60, so I don't fit into the usual type 2 profile. I don't even know if I need to worry about diabetes. How would I know if I'm heading to type 2 or Lada? Should I get more tests or just wait until my next yearly checkup to see where I stand? Thanks for any information.

I think you should find something really important to worry about. You are not diabetic. Eat well, exercise, and enjoy life. If it hits you, you'll know. Keep getting annual checkups.

Ditto what xMenace said.

Be happy.

Thanks :)

I really try not to worry about it, but I've read so much on type 2 and they say there is no such thing as prediabeties...you either are or you aren't. According the U.S. criteria I would be considered to have prediabetes (which according to many would mean I have diabetes). So it's really just a technicality that in Canada I'm considered "normal".

I just find it all so confusing. On one hand you're told by those that do have diabetes to take those prediabetes numbers seriously and treat yourself as though you have it. On the other hand your told, your numbers are normal, you don't have diabetes, don't worry.

I'll take your advice and try not to worry, eat healthily and be active.

The best thing you can do is just live your life as healthy as possible and have annual checkups by your doctor. That way, if you do at some point develop diabetes, you'll catch it quickly. No point in driving yourself crazy about something that "might" happen, just live your life as healthy as you can, which is something EVERYONE should do, diabetic or not!

.... How would I know if I'm heading to type 2 ...

You could have your insulin levels tested. If the are high, there is insulin resistance, even if blood glucose is "normal".

Thanks princesslinda and BlueSky.

Can I just ask a quick question about type 1.5. I've read that this is slow progressing type I. Would my fasting glucose and OGTT likely have increased more from Jan 06 to Sept 07, than it did if I were heading towards LADA? My OGTT actually went down.

I couldn't find an edit button...just wanted to add.

In otherwords, how long could the progression take from high normal blood glucose to type I (LADA)?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules on that. Everyone is different. LADA gets steadily worse over time. But the time it takes varies a lot and can be many years. If you had cut back on your carbs and/or got more exercise, your blood glucose levels could improve over that period, even with LADA.
