I have been using this pump for three days now and did the first site change this morning. It left what looks like a bruise - see below. Is this normal?

I'm not a pumper, but it sure looks like a bruise to me! BlueSky, I'm glad you posted about your new pumping experience...I was wondering how it was working out for you! Keep us posted...

I've never had bruising. What did you insert it with, a pellet gun?

LOL ... I used the Cleo inserter. It seemed to work very well - no pain on insertion or during use. I had to pull really hard to remove it, but it looked like the bruise had been there for a while.

Holy **** man. No that is not normal. I have been pumping for a year now and have had only 1 bruise but it was not that bad. Just some minor blueing on mine. Most of thetime about an hour after removal you cannot even tell I had a set in there. Something is wrong there.

Thanks Alice. It is going well, or so I thought before I changed the site ... :o .... They started me on conservative settings, which makes sense. My blood sugars are a bit high and I am having to do lots of corrections while I work on getting the basal rate up to where it needs to be. I am making good progress with this. I was immediately impressed with how much more stable my blood sugars became. I am recording everything on a control sheet and will post it when I have a week's worth of data.

Hopefully it won't happen again. The pump trainer and diabetes nurse supervised the insertion. I have emailed the picture to them and asked for their input.

Just agree about the "not normal" part. I have used the Cleos and other sets and have never seen anything that looked like that!

I've gotten bruising where the cannula rubbed or nicked a capillary, but that looks more like where the inserter would touch. Strange.... Do you normally bruise very easily?

No, I don't think so. I had to pull really hard to remove it. Could that have caused the bruising?

I doubt it BlueSky. I have had some bad looking sites in the past. I found that if I put a small dime sized circle of IV3000 under the set it doesn't "suck" up my skin and leave a bruise where the canula inserts. The piece of IV3000 is so small you don't see it because it is under the sticky part of the canula. Try it. You might find the bruising goes down a lot. It seems that the suction created is just too much for my skin.

You may have just hit a small vein early on in your pumping experience. Lucky you. :(

Thanks for that, Nancy. I hope it doesn't happen again. But if it does, I will definitely try using IV3000.

I've been sing the Comfort Short 23inch Tubing 60cm. Although I manually insert these, I've never had anything that looked like that.

I did try those fancy pants auto inserters at the beginning and fond them to be cumbersome.

I like having control of how fast or slow I put them in.

If done very slow I do not feel them going in.

I have had a not form under my skin that is slowly going away though.

Maybe those sets are not quite for you.

Wow! That's enough to scare you away from pumping! (if you got a bruise like that every time!) I've never had anything like that either BlueSky - hope it doesn't happen to you again.

I've had that happen once or twice...comes with the territory I suppose.

Is it for sure a bruise, not skin irritation? I'm wondering if you're reacting to the adhesive, and if the irritation coupled with having to rip it off brought up the blood under the skin. If that is the problem, the IV 3000 fix should help. You might also want to soak your set with detachol or something like that before removing.
