I am new to the forum and will be hopefully pumping w/in 3weeks. I have been talking w/ my Endo whom is a pumper herself, using Cozmo. I visited the Pumpers display night that showcased all the popular brands including the CGM's.
I was originally thinking of the MM522 w/CGM BUT after the meeting walked away thinking Animas 2020 w/ DexCom SEVEN.
Here are my thoughts:
MiniMed:
Good but larger than 2020
backlight is difficult
programming is several steps to acomplish a simple task
not all infusion sets work
small screen
no carb database
COMBO unit, pump+CGM
2020:
Smallest
carb database
Color screen
more customizable
easier programming
DexCom SEVEN:
extra unit to carry, no a big deal untill going out for evening. 522 would be better here.
smaller insertion unit/more comfortable
7d vs 3d wear time
OmniPod:
Never got to talk w/ these people.
no tubing a +
data review and stats? not sure
failures? only read it has been hit or miss
still requires PDM to activate, so really just deletes tubing.
I am looking for suggestions and those who have possibly tried or considered all 3 and what was your reasoning was and model chose?
Thanks is advance.

I would, and did, go the 522 route.
Here's my thoughts. It's nice having the pump/cgms on one display. Very nice.
The MM backlight is very easy to get used to.
All the pumps are great pumps, but the 2020 lacks some features I like in the 522. The 522 gives you averages on carb intake, insulin delivery, and bg. The 2020 doesn't. That was kinda a turn off for me. Also, the 2020 seems to take a lot of button pushing compared to the 522. And the 2020 cancels a bolus if any button is pressed. Kinda a turn off for me. It's not a bad pump, I just didn't like those aspects.
The Omnipod is a very cool and innovative system. However, after seeing it in person, there's no way I could cope with wearing the pod. It's just too big and heavy.
I don't know much a bout the Dexcom, but I like that on the computer charts it tells you what your actual bg was instead of just sticking a huge square there like MM does.
I like how Carelink is online cause my trainer can look at it.
In short, pros cons to each, I chose 522.

Omnipod is neat until you realize you have to wear a box. People do love it though......
I'm a mm722 pump/gcm, and I reccomend it to anyone.....(you can use a sensor for like 9 days, honestly....)
The animas looked tight with the color screen etc

The 522 gives you averages on carb intake, insulin delivery, and bg. The 2020 doesn't. That was kinda a turn off for me.
Only get the average for BG if you input all your BGs into it, which I bet most wouldn't. Why put BG readings into a meter and then have to put them into a pump as well. Extra step for no extra benefit.
Also, the 2020 seems to take a lot of button pushing compared to the 522. And the 2020 cancels a bolus if any button is pressed. Kinda a turn off for me. It's not a bad pump, I just didn't like those aspects.
With the pump being "off" (so to speak) it takes 3 button pushes of the same button to get to the bolus menu and then if you want a normal bolus just one more button push of the same button. I can actually program a normal bolus without looking at the screen until I need to see how much insulin it's at and even then, I can usually just hold the up arrow down and get in the ballpark before looking at it.
As for the canceling a bolus...I actually like that anything can cancel one. But I do see how that could be bad for some, just all depends on the person's point of view.
I don't think one can go wrong on any pump and they all have thier pros and cons. Personally, call the companies up and ask for a demo and a 3 day wear. Then see which one you like easier.

Thanks for the quick response. A few more quesitons:
Did the carb database interest you at all?
Do you have any issues w/ the screen size of 522?
Is the CGM catheder/sensor uncomfortable?
How often do you use the CGM?
Does insurance cover your CGM?
Your BIO notes the CozMo and 522, have you tried the 2020?
Thanks
I find the MM Sensor to be more comfortable than any insertion set I have used...it could be because it's thinner than an insertion set, and has nothing flowing through it, but still.
My insurance did not cover the CGM, and I will continue to pay for it out of pocket. I am convinced it can change my life. I've not gone more than a day without it since I started it in early August of this year, and at this point I'm literally addicted to the notion of knowing what my blood sugars are at a glance.

Did the carb database interest you at all? My Cozmo has a carb database, and I really don't use it that much.
Do you have any issues w/ the screen size of 522? No.
Is the CGM catheder/sensor uncomfortable? Not usually.
How often do you use the CGM? Most of the time for now.
Does insurance cover your CGM? Yeah, for now, for another month, till I need to appeal again.
Your BIO notes the CozMo and 522, have you tried the 2020? No, I'm basing what I know about it from using the virtual pump on their website.
Jedi- as for button pressing, if you use the bolus calculator, the 2020 takes WAY more button presses than the Cozmo or Paradigm.
I do enter all reading in my pump because I use several meters and putting them in my pump gives me one complete place to look back.

I agree with Jedi. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the ones you listed.
Though I don't mind carrying 2 devices, some may see that as a disadvantage. I like having 2 for exercise. I can disconnect my pump and carry the CGMS in my pocket without having to worry about the insulin or tubing. As for pump features, I have come to be quite lazy and find most of the features (i.e. carb database and bolus calculator) more of a nuisance to use. One of the most valuable features to me on the Animas pump is the audio bolus. I commonly use the audio bolus on vibrate when I am in a situation that I do not want to have to take the pump out of my pocket. I would be happy with a CGMS and an incredibly basic pump that had audio bolus.

I read the 522 manual since I couldn't find a virtual 522 anywhere online....
And to me the 2020 just takes a few more because you confirm everything on each screen instead of it all at the end. In a way it's a confirmation, but it's more a way to look at the other settins such as one's ratios and to change them if necessary. I couldn't even figure out how to change ratios on the 522 via the manual without going into the bolus wizard setup.

I looked at all the pumps last year and came down to the Animas and the MM pumps. I had each one for a weekend and ran the pump like I would if it was connected to me. It came down to the programming and features ofthe pumps. I liked the MM pump a little better due to easier for me programming. Less steps for bolus. I don't think you will go wrong with either pump as they are both good. My suggestion is to get a demo pump for a few days and use it and go through every program you can. It will come down to a personal decision.
The carb data base is a nice selling feature but I doubt if many really use it.
I do put all my readings in my pump also. Takes a few seconds and I can download the readings to Carelink and get a printout of my readings and insulin usage. I like that feature.
I am using a MM 522 without the CGMS due to insurance not paying for it yet.

I used the 1250 for 2 years and then changed to the 722 and will use the CGMS when I get trained on it. I never used the carb counter in the 1250. I like the 722 much better than the 1250. I also am one that inputs my BS into my pump as I use different meters through out the door. I have not been officially trained on the pump yet, and only have been using it for a month or so now. I don't use the care links yet, but I never used the Animas software. The screen may be little on the 722, but I think the lettering is bigger than what was on the 1250.
Overall I like the 722 much better than the 1250.
I have not looked much at the 2020, I don't think there is much difference between the 1250 and the 2020 is there?
As for all this button pushing comments. I think it is much easier to use the 722 than the 1250 getting places within the pump.
I dont get the omnipod is like wearing a box comment. Isn't a standard pump like wearing a box with a tube stuck to your flesh?
no matter how you pitch it, you have to carry something to pump insulin.

As someone who has recently started pumping I must say that when it all came out in the wash, I chose the MM 722 with the CGMS.
I tried them all out in the office, read all of the literature and lurked on all of the forums. And It was the logical choice for me.
It works. It's easy to use. And it's kind of hard to screw it up.
Now if it was just a closed loop system. Someday perhaps.

I've been wearing a Dexcom since March of this year. My Minimed is over 4 years old and I recently tried both the Animas 2020 and the Cozmo 1800 pumps. The Animas is nice but it's missing some features that I really like in the Cozmo. So I'll be going with the Cozmo next week.
I know it's form factor is a bit bigger. But it also has a food database and a nice feature that helps correct lows, plus a whole lot more that I'll have to write about on my blog soon.

Thanks for all your suggetions. Now I'm looking through the software that each Company provides.
Can people comment on pros/cons of software for 522, OmniPod, 2020 and DexCom??

How about pros/cons of software packages for 2020, OmniPod and 522?
I have not used omnipod but have used the software for Minimed and Animas. The Animas software is ok, but nothing I would really consider special... after all, this is diabetes management software we're talking about here. Most of the computer software I have used for meters and Animas software looks like it's from 1995.
Minimed has a pretty good overall system. I have never uploaded a pump to it, so I don't know how good it is for that. Since it is web based and free to make an account, I suggest you try it out for yourself. http://carelink.minimed.com Obviously you won't be able to upload a pump, but you can upload your BG meter and hopefully get an idea of what it's like.
I personally wouldn't buy a pump just because of the software but if I had to choose, I would say Minimed probably has the best overall. However, I think Animas software might offer some slightly more comprehensive reports. Not sure about carelink but I know the Animas software will even show you exactly what your basal rates were for each day.

Thanks. Everyone I've talked to and everything I've read indicates that the MM software is more complrehensive than most. I'm not lookin to base my descion on software but just want to explore the major aspects of my "short list".
thanks again
