View Full Version : BG reading 435 - now what?

I'm sick - sinus infection - and was put on a steroid pack. I've done that before with little problem - just monitor often and expect it to be higher than usual. I bolused for the 435 reading and 15 minutes later it was 427. Do I just keep checking and keep trying to bring it down or do I need to do something else? I'm not used to numbers this high - have had them before, but not on the pump.

Don't bolus again, the insulin takes more time than 15 minutes to work. I'd test and bolus, considering IOB, once an hour. Make sure you're drinking plenty of fluids. If you aren't down at all an hour from now, take a shot, consider changing the site. Make sure your insulin is good. Test your ketones.

FunnyGirl - thanks - shows how I'm not thinking. It's 15/15 for LOWS, not highs. I've been running higher ever since I got sick - about last THursday, but it's the steroids that are skyrocketing, I'm sure. But all your advice is good - thanks for the help.

With steroids I usually do a 300% basal. I take uber high doses though when I end up on steroids. Start by trying maybe 120%, then increase slowly if you have no effect.

more good advice - this was a pack with 6 pills yesterday, 5 today - decreasing each day. I think I'll just test and bolus for now. I'd probably get just hte right basal when it started getting OUT of my system!

45 minutes later - down to 412 - so ... getting better.

Okay - I did set a temp basal rate of 120% for the next 12 hours and I'll test A LOT. Thanks again. I was in a mini-panic here!

Thanks! With FunnyGirl's good advice I was down to 110 at supper. Today floating in the 160 - 190 range, but not over 400! I just set another temp basal for 120% for 12 hours. With the decreasing dose of steroids I'm afraid to do more or longer, but ... though high I'm hoping that's not out of sight for sick and steroidy.
