Intersting bit of news here. Sadly, to get enough for it to work, you'd have to turn into an alcoholic. Maybe it will end up in a drug at some point though:

Well, I am dubious of small scale studies. Many just don't pan out. That stuff is available at your local walgreen's in pill form if you want to pay to try it.

You hear a lot about the health benefits of red wine these days. Funny to read this post today, because yesterday, I told my hubby that I was thinking about drinking one glass of red wine every evening, to see if there's any noticable effects on my cholesterol numbers in three months. He laughed at me because I'm not a drinker and I've never liked red wine. But heh, I still might try it!:)

I had a Doctor once tell me to drink a small glass of dry red wine for every meal.
I even bought the wine. It was like anything else thats good for you it's hard to keep up.
I bet that a 6ounce glass with every meal 3 times aday would be very benificial.
I could not imagine any noticable effect from such a small amount.

In Sunday Morning's newspaper, there is an article that says "People who have one drink a day increase their chance of getting colon cancer by about 15%." "If the right one don't get you, then the left one will!"

I read about resveratrol in science news (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/10/071002131152.htm) a while back. I also read that the level of resveratrol varies greatly depending on the type of grapes (http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/04/070419095607.htm) used with muscadine grapes (http://www.ars.usda.gov/is/pr/1997/971120.htm) having the most. I ordered a batch of ground up skins and seeds (where the resveratrol is mainly found) from a little place in Georgia, still waiting for delivery...
I realize this is a bit of a stretch but I'm willing to experiment.

I have a glass of dry red wine at bedtime 3-4 days a week to help increase my HDL. In 3 months time, I went from an HDL of 23 to 46....my most recent one was 50. Like you, I don't care for the taste...I often have a Crystal Lite chaser nearby (much to the dismay of my husband, who loves wine). I don't notice it helping with my blood sugars though.

Maybe the stuff doesn't work at all, then again, it may matter how much resveratrol is in the brand(s) of wine you choose. See the second link in my post above.
It may be that red wine, which does have this stuff, just doesn't have enough of it to matter.
If it does work I'm not sure it would keep BG lower or maybe help lower it faster after a meal.

I have at least one glass of red wine every night. If I skip it, my fasting blood sugar is at least 20 points higher (high 90's vs high 120s)
For me, the difficulty is keeping from the philosophy that if one is good for you, a whole bottle must be great :(

These studies are driving me crazy! Wasn't there just a study discussed in the news a few weeks ago...women who drank 1-2 drinks a day (wine, beer, anything) were at higher risk of cancer?
I wish they made decent wine in tiny bottles at tiny prices! I can't stand the cheap stuff...and it doesn't taste the same stored overnight.
How about a nice Italian Barolo or Barbaresco in a box? Just kidding...really! (My husband would have a fit!)

Did you order from a winery? Which one? Where?

I ordered the 24 oz jar of Ison's Muscadine Purple Grape Skin Powder (http://www.isons.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=IN&Product_Code=GrapeSkinPowder&Category_Code=MuscadineProducts) from Isons Nursery on the web. I just called them to check on my order (20 days ago) and left a message.
They sell plants too so you could grow your own - alas I'm too far north for that.

I just returned from Italy after a two-week vacation. I spend a lot of time there looking for come good Barolo, but the cheapest I would find was 45 Euros! So forget Barolos in boxes!
One glass of red wine every night works well for me, but the problem is that I am ahead of myself by a couple of years.

P.S. I know you were kidding, Alice. So am I.

I haven't tried it yet, but the web site suggests adding it to smoothies, shakes, or juices. Seems reasonable to me. I expect it to taste kinda 'grapey' but have no idea. Since I'm such a tough guy I'll start out just adding it to all that water I drink - like I do now with wheatgrass. It doesn't have to taste good - it just has to be good for me. My taste buds are in the passenger seat, I'm driving!
I could see adding it to all kinds of things, like salads or yogurt for example. I'll let you know.

My muscadine grape skin powder arrived yesterday so I tried some last night. It has the grapey smell and flavor along with the maroonish purple color I was expecting.
It is rather gritty and doesn't dissolve quickly so it makes quite a mess in a glass of water but tastes fine. I mixed it into a glass of OJ with pulp - still messy but good. Right now I'm having my morning dose with blueberry yogurt and raw walnuts. It's noticeable in there but again, not bad.
George who loves blueberry yogurt even likes the stuff!

I suspect that the grittiness keeps the Glycemic Index lower so that's probably a good thing. George doesn't seem to care either way.
