i read somewhere that protein is bad for the kidneys if ur diabetic....well i drink protein shaakes cuz i work out a alot?
is this bad?
There has been some research that suggests a high protein diet might be bad for people who already have some kidney damage; other research contradicts that. I wouldn't worry about your protein shakes, but that's just a personal opinion.

airtas,
What kind of protein shakes do you drink? I used to use protoplex, but got tired of the off taste. Using protein shakes really helped me get lean a couple of years ago. I've let myself go and need to get back in shape.

I think that "too much" protien is not so good. My goal is to keep my protien intake under 30 - 40 grams per meal. Because I am an active person, I think that this is fine.
How often do you drink protien shakes?

There's nothing wrong with protein shakes provided your kidneys are currently functioning fine AND you're actually putting that protein to use by bodybuilding.

Animal protein is hard on the kidneys - I don't know about the nutritional supplements and such.
If your kidney function is good then you should be fine. When is the last time your kidneys were ck'd? Blood and urine?
I hope this helps. I am at the stage with protein spillage from my kidneys. First off any and all protein is bad. There is no difference in the type except vegetable and animal that has been explained to me. Vegetable is less of a problem but is still a problem if the kidneys are working hard and spilling the stuff. If you have a creatin reading of 1.4 which is on the boarder of high normal and abnormal you would need to watch your intake. If you have no kidney function problems at this time you can still causer a strain on the kidneys if you take too much for your body’s ability to use. Unfortunately I do not know what those limits are. I am only repeating my doctor’s information. Simply a lot of protein can kill our kidneys the same as too much of any item in our diet. It just takes time to occur.
I hope this is a little helpful. It unfortunately is all I remember at the moment. Off the cuff, I have been normalized since I have been eating lower protein amounts for the past 12 years.
