View Full Version : How high to cause blurred vision?

I had forgotten about this but a few years ago (before I knew anything about diabetes) I had several episodes of blurry vision in the mornings. It didn't happen every day but this went on for two or three years. It wasn't the kind of blurring that you get when your prescription lenses aren't strong enough - you can use your eye muscles to overcome some of that. Rather, this was blurring that I could not fix by squinting.

One time, I tried to quantify how bad it was by moving closer and closer to an object until it became clear - I thought that I could give my ophthalmologist some data. The problem was that it didn't clear up at all. The doctor sent me for a FBG but that was normal (I wasn't having the problem the day of the test).

Now that I have been diagnosed type 2 and learning about the disease, I suspect that high BG might have been the culprit.

Does that sound like the kind of vision problem that can be caused by high BGs? If so, how high does one have to go to experience a problem like that?

I have not had this problem for a couple of years but I'm still curious.

Thanks,

Mark

I get blurry when my bg is low. When I hit 50 and definately in the 40's things start to get blurry. I can tell very easily, because I won't be able to read things on the chalkboard/bullentin board across my classroom.

Did the blurriness go away after you ate something? How long did it take before it would go away?

I do not get blurry when my numbers are high, rather my eyes just feel dry and/or odd. (hard to describe)

If I recall it just took time for it to go away. I was getting to work before 6:00 AM and I think by 10:00 or 11:00 the problem was gone. I didn't eat until I got to work.

Knowing what I know now, I wish I had been able to test. As I said, this hasn't happened in over a year (maybe two) but I'm still curious if my diabetes was the cause.

Blood Glucose variation wheather it is high or low can cuase this complication.

Mark, It's like this like it is deireareable to have a constant BG and be active and eat properly and get to enjoy real food!! But first get yourself a BG meter and you will get to lern about what works for you. What you can eat and exersice and water!! Drink plenty of it. :D

As for the fat, Whell you know what to do, Do you?

Peter - this all happened before I was Dx'd and before I knew anything about diabetes. All of that has changed - I test 6-10 (or sometimes more) times each day, exercise 6 days a week, I'm careful about what I eat, and so far I have lost about 36 lbs.

The question was just a curiosity - I had not been diagnosed at the time of the blurriness but I'm assuming that the problem was a result of out of control BGs. So I'm just wondering how out of control it was. I've been pretty good about getting an annual checkup for the past ten years or so yet the bloodwork did not detect a problem. I guess another thing that I wonder is how long have I really had diabetes?

I realize that these questions can't really be answered but perhaps I can get an idea of what my disease was like back then.

I have blurriness every morning for about the first 20 min that I'm awake regardless of my bg level. I'm not a morning person so it takes awhile for my body to get moving in the am.
