I am not diabetic but my father is a type 2, and I know that I can prevent from getting it by eating correctly. I have stopped drinking sodas, coffee, candy, etc, but I was wondering what other foods are good to eat on a low sugar diet?

Also, what do you get when you go out to a restaurant?

I love ice cream and they make some great ice cream now sweetened with splenda or no sugar added that I do pretty good with. That and the rare sweets is about all I eat in this category. I have a list of only a handful of sweets that I ever really liked before diabetes caught up with me so I was very lucky in that department.

When I go out and eat, which isn't all too often anymore, I usually go to a buffet where I eat salads, tons of veggies and things like that. If I go to a fastfood place, I get grilled chicken sandwiches (but watch the bread, I only eat these maybe once a week) or I get a salad, most fastfood places have that now.

I love Subway and I just go for the whole wheat bread. :)

When I eat pizza, since I have YET to find a place with a whole wheat crust where I am, I either eat JUST the toppings or get a very thin Crust, Dominoes has this now and it's good, just not very filling like a normal crust would be. lol

I know others will have far better options than me, as I am still learning all of this myself, but that's what I do and I am usually always pretty safe with this.

Hi Dave - not to worry you, but eating perfectly won't necessarily prevent you from getting type 2 diabetes. Sometimes, if it's in the genes....you could get it regardless. Healthy eating habits are excellent though for many health reasons, so keep up the good work!

Meat, veggies, no starchy food (like white rice, pasta or potatoes) or anything that's low-carb. (salad dressings, beer etc.)

I think or truly believe if you stay away from MSG(monosodiumglutamate), and hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils....You won't become so resistant.....it's hard everything has some of that stuff in it...but hey I avoid it and I am still eating very well.....I don't know if this would prevent it, but I know if you end up developing diabetes, you might just have to control it with diet and exercise since u already took a precautionary measure to stay away from ingredients that makes the body insulin resistant...

Awesome post, thank you! I love Subway too, it's easily one of my favorites and my only frequented "fast food" place that I go too.

I do have a question regarding drinks: what are the best ones to go with as fas as taste? I've heard of diet sodas (which I won't drink anyways), Crystal Light, etc, as being great for a healthy diet, but are there any others?

P.S. I'm also lactose intolerant so I guess milk is out lol.

Unfortunately I do know that eating perfectly and exercising regularly will not prevent diabetes entirely, as I have a family history of it, but I would like to do everything I can to make myself healthier and try to lengthen the time until I will be diagnosed. I figure it's the best thing I can do for myself and when I do get it, I will know I gave it all I got to make sure it's all ready under control :)

So would seafood, such as shrimp, lobster, crab, etc, be ok to eat if I am out and about? As far as meat goes, about how much would be ok for me?

Actually I have tried to stay away from that stuff for years now :) I stopped eating at fast food places (McDonald's, Taco Bell, etc) over a year ago. I just figured, why poison my vody with that stuff, ya know?

Are there any other foods, other than sugared, that I should stay away from?
