.Manufacturers in America have asked US regulators for permission to market a new treatment for Type 2 diabetes. The drug is based on the saliva of a desert lizard and has been synthetically reproduced in the pharmaceutical company's laboratory.

The treatment is the first in a new class of medicines to treat Type 2 diabetes. The drug, known as Exenatide, is injectable and has been shown to lower blood glucose levels in clinical trials. It could be used for people with Type 2 diabetes who do not use insulin but who have difficulty maintaining target blood glucose levels.

Georgina Slack, Acting Head of Research at Diabetes UK said; "Diabetes UK welcomes any developments which offer people with diabetes further options for the treatment of their condition. Should this drug be licenced in the US, we will be monitoring its progress with interest."

Pharmaceutical companies in the UK will probably see how successful it is on the US market, before considering it for release on the UK market.

The lizard lives in American deserts and only eats four times a year. It controls its blood glucose levels with the compound exendin-4 that is found in its saliva. By copying this, scientists believe they may have found a way to help people with diabetes control their blood glucose levels.
