Hey, i just got back from my doctor and the Endocrine and diabetes clinic at the Ogden utah hospital. He is very good and really trust him, he was very impressed with my numbers and very happy. He decided its time for me to go on a pump he asked me if that was something I wanted to try and I said yes. Now, i have questions that I should have asked but didn't think of. He set me up an appointment with a pump trainer that is in there office. Do you think they will set me up with a pump at that time? Do you think they have pumps that they recommend or are they going to have me choose? I am completely new to pumps so any insight would be appreciated. I am double covered on insurance so I hope either Regence blue cross blue shield value care or IHC insurance will cover it. Anyone have any suggestions? I will now continue to read old posts. :D Thanks

Wishful thinking, but no.
Do you think they have pumps that they recommend or are they going to have me choose?
It really depends. My office helped me choose. A lot of offices seem to only know MM though.

So what will happen. I will go into this educator, she will tell me about pumps and say go buy one? Can someone tell me the usual procedure? Thanks

I'm not sure there is any standardized procedure. But I can tell you what I had to do. I went to the doctor, told them I wanted a pump. He said ok. I met with the educator. We discussed exactly what a pump was. She showed me the different models. I tried putting a site in. I met with the nutritionist. She confirmed that I know how to count carbs. I ordered the pump. Then I had training and got started on saline. Then i got started on insulin 3 days later.

Thanks, so when you order a pump they have you go back somewhere to get the training? Thanks for your help.

The CDE and dietician were part of my doctor's office. Usually the trainer works for the pump company.

When I decided it was time to go on a pump, I met with my endo. He faxed the necessary paperwork over to Mini Med and also contacted the pump trainer. They called me, took some information over the phone regarding my insurance coverage. The following day Mini Med called me back to let me know United Healthcare would pay for my pump. I filled out the necessary forms that they faxed to me and in less than ten days, my pump was delivered. I met with the pump trainer on a Tuesday to go over a few things regarding the pump features and counting carbs. I met with her again on Saturday morning and was pumping insulin within 2 hours.
Good luck to you!

Ok, so some of mine was backwards, I requested pump info online on Weds. Got a call from the MM rep on Thurs. He sent the info to MM, to see if my insurance would cover the pump, I then told my doc at my next appointment on the following Monday, that I wanted the pump, he said ok and to let him know what I needed and wanted, I got a call from MM the next day , Tuesday and my insurance would cover it and what my portion would be and set that up on a payment plan, she faxed me all the forms and I filled them out and gave her my doctor's info and a few days later, I got the pump and supplies delivered at work and 1 week later I met with the trainer from MM at my house and got hooked up. I have not seen the doctor since I told him I wanted the pump. I guess I should make an appt and let him know how things are going and get any scripts I need written.

We are in the same boat! I have an appt. with a CDE this Friday. My ins. co. has approved a pump and Medtronics has already shipped me one. As per suggestions on this forum, I have been playing around with the controls to become familiar.
Probably the CDE, after explaining, will hook it up using saline solution for a week to get used to it.
Look for postings by Belyro. She has blogged a lot when she went on the pump recently. They were very helpful to me.
I will keep you posted on my experiences. Needless to mention that I am quite nervous about it, but the results eventually will be great.

I went to the endo and he discussed different pumps with me. Pump companies called and I went with Medtronic. I went back to the endo with the necessary month log of blood glucose numbers and then those numbers were given to my insurance company. Once I jumped through all the insurance company hoops, my pump was shipped within a week and my training happened within two weeks.
My guess is your trainer will discuss pumps, take insurance info, find out what they need to approve and then have the appropriate pump company call you for specifics. I got a call the next day from the pump company and they asked me questions about the color I wanted, types of sets I prefered and shipping dates.
Good luck and congratulations.

Does anyone have experience with the insurance companies I mention above? Are they going to let this go thru? Any ideas on my end what the cost will be? And the cost on my end for supplies? I am only making 8 bucks an hour here and its been hard the last little while. Thanks

Be careful to not sign an Assignment of Benefits form for any pump until you get to evaluate the different pumps and make your own decision. This nearly happened to me until I realized what was going on and told them I wanted make my own decision. I wasn't even asked my preference or shown any pumps before I had the form in front of me made out for a MM. The different pump manufacturers have reps that will come out to your home and try to sell you their brand of pump. Take your time and ask lots of question. Good luck.
You shall be assimilated...

Even if we did have the same insurance companies, each policy is different depending on what your company has negotiated. Unfortunately, you will have to research this with your insurance company and possibly the person in charge of insurance with your company.
Good luck!
