I love this time of the year. Our grocery has bins of "in shell" nuts of all kinds. It takes me longer to eat them because I have to crack them, but they are always good. I also think they help keep my BS low.

This time of year and nuts always make me sentimental,LOL!
Really though it does because my husbands mom and dad,who everyone called Maw and Paw, every Christmas would give as their gift, because in the early days they were poor,
always made up a big box of nuts of everykind, peanuts, brazil
nuts, walnuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, etc. and fruit...oranges, grapefruit, red delicious apples, golden delicious apples, tangerines, large can of coffee, and hard candycanes for the kids and tie it up with a great big bow. The thing was by the time they fixed up 9 boxes like that,it wasn't cheap. I'll tell ya we looked forward to that every year. It really came in handyAnd so that's what we all did during the holidays, crack nuts eat tangerines and have an apple to share or make a pot of coffee for company, wonderful Christmas memories with Maw and Paw. Now they're both gone, and we all sure miss them. But, I try and stock up on all that stuff. Makes me want to give that this year to my kids for Christmas, just talking about it

Andypoo, When I was a kid, we got oranges and nuts and hard candy in our Christmas stockings. I thought oranges only got ripe at Christmas becaues it was the only time I had any...until I went to a friend's house in the summer and was offered an orange.

And my kids won't even touch them...

We always had some around the holidays - they were a real treat.

Hiya Penny :) Yes I love nuts as a snack but for me at this time of the year it's the fruits that I enjoy like mango's, watermelon, Strawberry's, avocados.
But as for the nuts (not the nut cases that we lookout for) There is the Thursday market in our town Ware there is an Italian gentleman who sells nuts here and a good selection to choose from and he also sings like Pavarotti and so a happy man. :D

I don't mind cracking my own nuts as it becomes a enjoyable pastime. :) Chomp Chomp. :D And keeps the BG to a happy level. :)

Peter, there was an older gentleman who sang to the customers at our grocery, I think management didn't like it and he quit doing it. I think they messed up, I enjoyed it.

Heh yes, I like people who has talent and he is a real ladys man (Tipical Italian) and a real charmer too but then there is other people who think differently Penny and that to me is sad.
It's like the wippy van and that classical music that sells the icecream for him. :)

all the posts brought back some memories! I always got an orange, mixed nuts, and the lifesavers book of candies in my stocking when I was a child, and I treasured them all!
To this day when the bags of mixed nuts in the shell show up at the grocery store I know Christmas can't be far off. I usually buy a bag and put them in a bowl at the kitchen table with several sets of nut crackers. My husband and the boys and I really enjoy sitting around cracking those nuts and eating them.
(and the total nil effect they have on the bs is a major bonus!)

i have a big problem with nuts, if i buy them i start eating them and well before long that "supply" that should have lasted weeks only lasts a couple of days. Then i feel bad and suffer the consequences later :(

When my dietitian told me that nuts were good for me, especially P, A & W (Peanuts, Almonds and Walnuts) I went crazy, especially with Almonds. I would buy a pound of raw almonds, soak them in saltwater and microwave until they were crunchy and eat a whole pound in two days. After a routine blood work my cardiologist told me that the potassium level was high. It took me some time to realize the cause of that. Unfortunately the nutrition label does not list potassium. So I backed off. Now only one pound per week. Fortunately I do not have to worry about my weight.
Walnuts are very healthy because of their unsaturated fats.

I enjoy nuts...esp this time of year. I remember as a kid sitting in the floor with newspapers around us, shelling pecans by hitting them with my dad's steel-toed work shoes....

I've recently gotten into pistachios....LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them....having to shell them keeps me from eating too many as well...double bonus!

I do not have any Christmas nut stories (other than family members of course :D) but I do eat a lot of nuts. I always toss 1/4 walnuts into my daily breakfast of low carb yoghurt & flax seed and I eat peanuts as a snack (just started adding some spicy hot flavored peanuts...yum) and I'll toss some almonds in various things.

I actually eat way too many peanuts (and I don't get the ones in the shells so I'm actually gobbling them up by the handful practically) now that I'm in school....helps get me through these classes....munching on peanuts and iced coffee...you should see the all of the bags I carry to class...the guy I sit next to calls it the 'camp store'...since naturally I'll need to bring the half gallon jug of iced coffee and how can you call it 'iced' if you don't bring the ice so I have an insultated jug for the ice, well I"ll need splenda and don't forget the bottle of hazlenut or vanilla flavoring (which looks like I'm adding whisky or vodka to my drink) and of course napkins for the mess I make when pouring all of this at my desk and I top it all off with a straw. I love the combination of peanuts and iced coffee!!!! I'm a happy gal. (and that's just for snack....you should see all I have to bring for dinner...oh my) :)

I have to be really neat with my pistachios...as my "furry boys" love to bat around the shells!

I love cashews as well, roasted and unsalted! Yum! I'm not a big pecan fan (gasp....that's unheard of in a southerner)

Cashews are at the top of my list followed by Pistachios and Pecans. I'm not fond of Brazil nuts. I will eat shelled peanuts whole, that is shell and all. Anyone else do this? I somehow learned this at old Milwaukee Country Stadium at a Brewers game.

It was a Christmas treat at my "Mrs. Clean" aunt's house to sit with my cousins with piepans filled with unshelled peanuts. Auntie, had an old tablecloth, then newspaper, and the piepans, under us and still fussed at us to not get any on the floor. I didn't realize until I had children what a great way this is to keep a bunch of kids busy, while the adults do their things.

the best place is in my husbands or son's garage with a fire in their stove, and sitting there with a log each propped up on it's side with a flat surface, each a hammer and smackin away and gabbin,You're right the kids absolutely love it! Give a kid a hammer and something to hit,and then be able to eat it,too! and there in hog heaven! LOL! when that's over just sweep with a broom and put the hulls in the fire.

I'm nuts.

I know 'cause they tell me: "You are what you eat." My recent nutrition research has me thinking raw almonds and raw walnuts mostly. We buy them in bulk at Costco and save a small fortune, not to mention that the brands they sell there are very tasty. We get pine nuts too, but just 'cause we love 'em so much.

Nuts are an important source of protein in my house full of vegetarians. Also, they contain mono unsaturated fats - the good kind, some trace minerals and they moderate hunger too!
