hello,
I put a post in the other forum.. don't know where exactly that was but... I'm here now!!!

I'm Stephanie.
I am a T1 and have been for 4 months. Just wondering how you were doing at 4 months.. were you "in control" or was is still iffy to you?

I feel like I could do better.

I take Lantis in the AM aprox 13u. then throughout the day I use my Novolog pen. I love that thing. I am controlled by me. I'm thinking my doc will put me on a pump if I don't get things right.

Let me know!!

Thanks for reading!!

Welcome to Diabetes Forums Stephanie. I was diagnosed with Type 1 in 1987 and my control was pretty iffy at four months. I was on NPH and REG insulin and had no idea about carb counting. I am on the pump now and life is a LOT better for me. Going on a pump has made my control 100x's better.

Glad you found us. Join in and enjoy!

The concept of control was pretty infantile when I hit 4 months. It's taken me 30+ years to get even close.

Your Doc makes the pump sound like it's a "bad" thing....

Thanks for the replys and welcomes!!!

I am on a 1-10 CC. (carb choise)
It seems some days are more controlled then others.

It's not the doc making the pump sound bad..
I just dont think I would like to wear a fanny pack to the bar.
Havnt really looked in to it much. Any advise or info on that would be aprechiated.

Thanks everyone!!

A fanny pack? It sounds like you are thinking of something more like the first pump:

Welcome aboard :wavey:

p.s. My endo didn't suggest a pump until I had good control. Then he gave me my "freedom"!

Wow...Where you live they make you go on a pump if you can't control it? Geez...Here it's a privelage to have a pump, and you can only get one if you're really in control of your DB. I went to an information night at my hospital and I don't think I'll be getting one anytime soon. I play hockey every Saturday's and that's something I just can't give up, and snacks, too.

They say that if you want to go on a pump, there's a period that you can't do any exercise or eat snacks with carbs (only salads etc), so that they can calculate stuff etc...That sucks :( I will probably do it in the spring when hockey ends. :(

Hello

I am, like you, also four months diagnosed T1. I have found the experience to be a bit of a rollercoaster ride. some days i think having Diabetes maybe saved my life because of the forced lifestyle changes i had to deal with and some days me and my insulin pen hate each other with venom.
My Glucose readings are still all over the place, just when i seem to be getting it right, suddenly for no reason i am way to high or way to low.
I firmly believe that this insulin lark will only be a temporary thing as a cure is only a few years away (IMO).
This forum has been absolutely invaluable to me in finding out everything one needs to know, as well as giving me emotional support when me and my pen have a fight.
I am also thinking about moving over onto a pump, there is lots on here you can read to determine whether its for you or not.

cheers
Daz

Yeah, I have no idea what I am doing when I get my pen out. I'm guessing.. It way sucks to get low.. I almost passed out 2 days ago. I was at 43bg.. eek! Then today I was at 300bg for no reason at all. Last ngiht we went out to the bars and stayed up very late so I got out of bed late so in turn I was late for my slow at 9am. It's a baad chain reaction. It seems to go that way for me. I will go through a 3 day streak with keeping my lvls right.. then here comes Mr. 275 and I flip.

I am still in that period that maybe some day I will be ok w/o insulin.
As fast as it was here, it will be gone again.

I too belive some day soon we will no loger have to worry about all these things. Then again... Reality is a "b" word.

I can relate to you Elliott. I can't live with out my cherry nibs!! I am the worst at staying out of the snack cubbord. A little at a time I tell my self... Not working yet!!

I am browsing my way through this place. So I will keep you updated on the goings on.

Thanks !

Stephanie

Hello Stephanie :D That's a nice name :) I have met you in the chatroom and had some fun.
My first 4 months for me was a bit scary as I did crave for real food as the hospital food sucked.
But then I have started to experiment once I had my first BG meter and that did open up possibilities in what I can eat. :D :D

Hi Stephanie. :) Welcome to the forums.

I'm actually at six months after my diagnosis, and there's no way I'm even close to having control. Like you were saying, I have days which are very high (200s), and then those that are quite low (50-60s). Sometimes, it goes to both extremes within the same day. It's very frustrating, but I know that diabetes isn't something I'm going to understand right away.

I am starting to get better at this, though. (IE- eating a moderate amount of carbs and eating things that I prepare myself in place of restaurant foods.) It's tough, but I know in time we'll both begin to see some healthier numbers. :)

hello,
I'm thinking my doc will put me on a pump if I don't get things right.

Find a doc that will aggressively support technology like the pump and Continuous Glucose Monitors. Your health care "team" should advocate your trying a pump as soon as possible - like as soon as you can count carbs accurately and associated insulin dosage.

If you don't like the pump, or can't manage it, then you can always go back to MDI. But to not try technology like the pump seems like a shame to me.

Fire doctors that won't or can't help you. I know more than my GP in some respects when it comes to diabetes. I know I do more research!

On continuous glucose monitors - they are definately "beta" technology right now. But one anecdote in support of them - I used to stick myself 8-10 time per day for tests, and still wonder where I was. My CGM tests my blood over 250 times per day!

Yes - you can be in control in 4 months with the right support, will power, and technology.

Good luck!

Joe

Hi Stephanie and welcome to the forum

I am 18 now and I was diabetic when I was 5. I cant remember much at all but all I know is I wasn't on much insulin at all maybe 1 injection a day. As I have got older i'm obviously on more insulin now I take humalog everytime I eat and 28 units of Lanuts at night. When I was at school my control wasn't good at all but now i'm getting older its getting alot better and i'm hoping to get my a1c down!

Hi! At 4 months i had perfect control... And i was a mess too. Obsessing way too much and controlling everything i ate and did.
I've got a slightly obsessive personality, so that's my way of handling stress and the post diagnosis depression that hit me then. since then i been better and more relaxed about control, but kept ok control.

Everyone has different ways of handling a situation likes this, getting diabetes. I think you'll find your way of handling it, if you haven't already. Hopefully it will mean better control, but give it time. We do have a lot of time to work with this disease. Our entire lives if i'm not mistaken.

Stephanie,
It sounds like with your lifestyle, i.e. going to bars, staying up late, loving to snack, etc. a pump would be the perfect fit for you. I gives you the freedom of waking up when you want, eating when you want, and other freedoms. I didn't get a pump for a long time because I didn't like the idea of being attached to something all the time either. But, wow!! Seriously...the benifits out weigh any negatives. I keep my pump in my pocket and make a small hole in the top of the inside of my pocket to thread the connector through, and nobody knows any different. Unfortunatly there is no cure right now and we have to do what we can to stay in good control. Don't worry to much though, believe it or not, control does get eaisier with time. "all we are saying, is give pumps a chance"
