sex and the pump; disconnect or not?

I have been wearing a pump for a month now. I wear it constantly- except when in the shower- I wear it even while racing motocross....it gets in the way during sex- how long can it be safely disconnected?

You can disconnect for as long as you want. Just bolus for what you missed when you reconnect. :) If you have the Cozmo 1800 pump, it'll calculate it for you.

Technical rule is 1 hour max and then one has to at least reconnect and bolus for the time missed/going to be missed.

The easiest way is to figure out what your BG will be from the missed insulin. If your sensitivity is 1 unit changes your BG 40 mg/dl and you are on a 1 unit/hr rate. Disconnecting will raise your BG 80 mg/dl during the disconnected time, well, about 2-3 hours later since it's given so slowly.

The longest I've ever been unhooked is 40 minutes, and my basal is about 30% of my TDD. We're only talking about 1/2 to 3/4 a unit at the most, so no. Even if I was unhooked a few hours, I'd be fine. I think.:stupid:

I disconnect. Been married 20 years so it does not stay disconnectd to long. :D 10 to 20 minutes does not bother me to disconnect. Any longer than that I'll just bolus a little extra.

I disconnect. I have to be above 180 before the act, or I will drop below 70 everytime. Now if it is unplanned and the wife gets busy, then I just make her hold the pump :D

This is the second biggest reason I won't switch to the pump. I like walking around naked sometimes and yea yeah it's gross, but I think whenever I am dating (and having sex if my relationship) she would find it gross too. And honestly i can't blame them. I don't mean to be shallow or vein but I an very, VERY self conscious about my body and the way I want my mate to see me.

That said it costs vs the quality of life. No one can deny that the pump is the best mechanism for insulin delivery. While that fact should trump all other concerns imo, just can switch to being tethered, traeoffs komrade.

About 50/50 for me. Sometimes I'll disconnect, other times I'll leave my shirt on (with my pump in the pocket).

If you disconnect, then you leave the infusion set open/uncovered = scratching your mate. So, I'd suggest caping it then.

As for how long you can stay disconnected? Those three minutes wouldn't hurt anyone (and with all that activity) .... :T

i dont bolus at all for the time missed. usually around an hour. my Bgs go down during that time...for some strange reason ;)

Omg, I know what you mean like when I am just in a towel and want to just drop it for the hubby ya know, um...i am wearing my undies cause where the **** am i gonna stick the pump LOL....I thought about a garter belt.....yea that would work, I'd still be fully naked....but I have had kids the self consious of my body fully has been thrown out the window with the kids, so pumping wasn't self consious for me, just another thing to the many marks and reminders of my little blessings and all.....which some woman diabetic or not, cannot do have four kids with not a one complication.....but hey I got a pretty face you don't have to bag that one up LOL.....

OH and to answer the question honestly if we are frisky I disconnect, and don't bolus any missed cause that work out is gonna drop me anyway LOL....and well if it is just let's do this and all....well then I stay connected....then for some odd reason I have to bolus some insulin a couple of hours later cause more then 1 orgasim and not being frisky tends to make me high even when connected the whole time LOL.......triple the treat I go to almost 200 weird....

thanks for all the input my friends. i will try and disconnect without any bolus and see what happens- i will just have to work extra hard to keep the sugars down :-)
