View Full Version : Insulin leaking from pen?

Hello all. Recently, I took a Humalog pen out of the fridge to begin using it, but noticed that there's something wrong. I find that as soon as I put the needle on the pen, insulin starts to drip out A LOT. I have had this happen with other pens before, especially when I first take them out of the fridge and start using them, however, this is a different thing entirely. It seems like much more insulin is escaping. Actually, when I do inject, I don't feel any resistance from the stopper pushing the insulin out (even if I have to give a substantial amount - say, 6 units or more.)

So, what I suspect is that some of the insulin I am trying to take for meals is getting out before I even set the dial for the amount of units. I have been testing two hours after my meals the past couple of days, and have been running slightly high. Or, sometimes, I am much higher than I'd like, but that's not a constant thing.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? If so, what does it mean? And could it be giving me less insulin because of it? Thanks!

When that happens, be sure to prime the pen before you use it. Dial up 2 units and depress the plunger. If a drop appears at the end of the needle, you can be fairly sure that you will get the required dose.
