About 4:30am for me. It seems to come and go. It's not every morning for me. It used to be though.

I start basaling for it at 5am. I tend to drop pretty low from about 2am till 5am then I shoot way up..

It varies for different people. After I started pumping I had a late morning high suggesting my DP appeared about 10 am. That was 2 hrs after breakfast but I had not had highs then while taking injections. It only started after pumping. I had to set a lower morning carb ratio to solve the problem. Here is s a good site about DP:..........diabetic-talk.org/dp.htm

I am so frustrated by this. The better my bedtime number is, the worst my morning number is.
Last night, it was 104 before bed. Woke up at 1am and it was 200. This morning when I woke up for good (normal time for me) at 4:30, it was 211.
I'm having this freaking temper fits in the morning when I test. I'm type 2, so don't know if that makes a difference? But it is so frustrating to do great on my numbers all day (through insulin, eating right and exercise) to have it trashed while I'm asleep.

I recently, Oct., stayed up all night and tested every half hour. It was very much worth it as I ironed out the last few wrinkles of my profile. I haven't had a serious nighttime low since :) This is not something I recommend you do often as it is hard to do, especially for us aging folks. I suspect it can also muck up your normal rates if done too much. Sleep is a very important part of all of this. Using a CGMS is the ideal way to figure things out. I'd love t be able to rent or borrow one for short stints.
Oh DP used to be so EASY for me!
It would start just as I woke up. I would inject a couple of units and stay fairly well straight on my waking number until I had breakfast and injected again. Sweeeet eh! But I had no idea how easy I had it!
Those were the days... Dunno what I've done to deserve it, but now I get the REAL DP. Kicks in at some point after 5am (I'm testing later and later every morning to try catching it) and shoots my bg up stupidly high in no time at all, so that I'm always far out of range by the time I wake up.
I know I'm not going low overnight anymore - I did for a few weeks, and that was an understandable reason for a high waking number (and made me really thankful that my liver was doing its job!). I wonder if that short time of overnight lows started a liver-kicking habit or something?
*mumble grumble* Life was so much simpler with the 'wake' phenomenon than it is with real DP. Grrrr.
I know that if I eat a carb heavy supper it's worse. I also know it goes up VERY Fast so sleeping in makes it a trillion times worse too. But that's about as far as I've got with my attack on DP so far.
There go my hopes of an A1c in the fives, eh!

My DP also starts when I wake, so my pump is set to increase my basal rate 1.5 hours before I wake...

I'm EXACTLY the same. my BG's go berserk between 5 am and 6 am!!! The other day I had a rise from 5.9 to 9.8 mmol between 5.10 am and 5.50 am. I now have to take a ridiculous Bolus (14 U) as soon as I wake to try and control it. Using my ratios, I calculated that my liver dumps about 55-60 g carbs into my system - that's the equivalent of over 0.5 litre of orange juice. I'm taking more Apridra at 6 am for a 40 g carb breakfast than for the whole of the rest of the day (typically ~ 200g carbs).

It may not actually be releasing any more sugar at all. The bulk of the impact is due to all those hormones being released causing insulin resistance. When you examine your ratios at different times of the day, it's apparent that these same ratios account for most of the insulin need - no new sugar or very little new sugar is actually being dumped.
I may have to do a math lecture :(

X: Thanks for your post. That makes perfect sense . Not only do I need about 5-6 U Apidra just to kill the rise in BG, but if I eat breakfast my I:C ratios which are normally about 1:9 go down to about 1:5 or less.
My DP went away shortly after I first started pumping. Then it came back, then it went away, now it's back.
*Ding" (The light goes on.)
DUH. I think I just figured it out. Every winter when the days get longer and particularly colder, my DP seems to return. Starts about the end of November and lasts until about March. I'll sure watch it this coming year to see if it does it again.
Observation. Experimentation. Adjustment. The story of our lives, huh?
My DP shows up every morning about 5-5:30 (when I get up.) I have to take 2-3 extra basal units by about 10 AM to cover. It works out to .5 extra units per hour for me.

Exactly. If you were releasing sugar, your I:C wouldn't change because that reflects insulin sensitivity.
Mich, that's very interesting indeed.

If this episode also deals with Matt deciding to build a swimming pool, then it re-runs on Saturday on TLC.
I used to watch it but I found Matt kind of annoying. But, I told TIVO to grab this episode.
Just take it from me, with my high brow addition to Big Brother but intolerance for this show. (FYI, it will start again in FEB so there's a winter one this year, then another summer one!!!!!!!!!!!)
