Help! If you're in Ontario and/or Canada

If you live in Ontario... or Canada, and are on oral meds, I need your help please. :bawling:

Are you on the 'slow release', 'extended release' (whatever) form of oral meds?

I am told there is no such thing as Metformin slow release, or extended release, or long acting, whatever.

Metformin comes under other names such as glucophage... and I know I was taking glumetza in England. But I am told there is no such thing here in Ontario. No slow release. No extended release. Nothing. Come on! I have a hard time believing that.

Before I pull out all my hair... if anyone is on such meds could you kindly provide the DIN number so I can go ASAP to the drugstore and tell them what I really REALLY need please?

Marie, I hope you get what you need as I cannot help you as I am in australia. It must ne so frustrating having to put up with the meds that you have to deal with.

Thank you Peter for your kind words. They are much appreciated. I am so frustrated and upset! Dealing with diabetes over here in the homeland has been difficult to say the least. Regular Metformin gives me terrible headaches and I crash, especially in the morning. The pharmacist kept telling me I need to take my meds WITH food. No kidding!

JayP, thanks for the info! I see you're in the US. Why would there be regular Metformin only in Canada and nothing else? It just doesn't make sense.

GLUMETZA™
Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects sugar levels in the blood stream and if left untreated may result in the damage or dysfunction of many organs including the kidneys, heart, and eyes.

Glumetza™ (metformin hydrochloride) treats type 2 diabetes by decreasing the amount of sugar produced by the liver and decreasing the amount of sugar absorbed by the intestines.
GLUMETZA is the first once-daily metformin formulation available in Canada. Compared to other metformin formulations that require multiple administrations per day, a once daily therapy may improve compliance and therefore make it easier for patients to achieve better glucose control.

GLUMETZA is indicated for the control of high sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent, mature onset) diabetes, as an addition to dietary management, exercise, and weight reduction, or when insulin therapy is not appropriate.

I had a chat with a pharmacist who confirmed GLUMETZA is available in Canada. She had never ever handled any, and she is a certified DE. With that fact, I'm not surprised some might not know about it.

In answer to your question yes it is available in Canada but not commonly prescribed as my doctor actually had to do some reading about it when I asked for it.

Mine comes from Shoppers Drug Mart and I will give you the information on the bottle.

You know... when I first moved to Ottawa, I was prescribed Glumetza. I still have one pill left! Says M500 on it, and it's oval shaped, just like Schlep mentioned. How come they can't see that in my file??! I've delt with the SAME pharmacy ever since the move. I don't go elsewhere so I can have better service. Live and learn.

I am getting excited anyway because I feel there is light at the end of the tunnel at last. I came this close to just throw out all meds. I am officially without a doc and the pharmacy here is as helpful as a teaspoon of water for my diabetes.
