Less Insulin??

Hey Everyone,

Just a quick question, I was diagnosed T1 about two months back. My BS was very high. Over 40mmol/L. It came down pretty quickly in the first week of using insulin and I have it pretty much under control. The problem(or blessing) I'm experiencing is that my Insulin requirements have, over the last week or so, less than halved. Is this normal? I'm really using a lot less insulin than I was a week ago. I finf that if I use the dose I was using before I end up having a quite a bad Hypo.

If there is anyone who an help or explain to me whats going on I would greatly appreciate it.

Yes, it is normal for this to happen. Injecting insulin relieves the stress on the beta cells. And it is not unusual for it to look like the diabetes has gone away. But it is only temporary. You will sooner or later have to increase your insulin doses as the production of insulin by your beta cells declines and eventually stops altogether.

A couple of things to keep in mind. One is what BlueSky said above, the other is that high BG levels seem to make me more resistant to insulin. I know what my ratios are for normal everyday stuff, and my requirements are fairly low. However, if my BG goes up much above 10 then my insulin requirements go up a whole load more than you'd expect.

Don't worry that it has reduced; if it is keeping you under control and you feel well then it's the right dose.

That's exactly the case with me. The higher my bg, the lower my ISF, or BG:I ratio. One of the features on the latest Cozmo pump is a variable ISF based on current bg readings. I want that feature!

Thank You so much for your comments. It really does make a lot more sense now. I got such a fright a couple of nights ago when my BS tested at 2.7mmol/L. Lucky for coke and condensed milk!!
