When I was first diagnosed I tried to eat right, lost 15 lbs and exercised. I was taking metformin 500 mg 3 times a day and my numbers were great.

I got ill on the metformin and could no longer take it, so I was put on glyburide. My weight shot up but I was eating what I wanted and my numbers were good.

They took me off the glyburide and put me on time released metformin, I now figured I could eat what ever I wanted and do no exercise. My weight continued to increase. And my numbers were terrible.

Last week I spent the week eating what I wanted and my numbers were terrible and I was ill all week.

I told my wife I could not live like this any longer. On Monday I started my low carb diet and continued with the metformin. Today although still not good my numbers have dropped by 30% and I have lost 8 lbs.

But I feel good.

Diabetes you win I will follow a low carb diet and look after myself. :)

I feel the same way. I was diagnised early and have not had a fasting over 135 or a pp over 250. I have been on Metformin-ER (500 mg) for about three months. At first the BG was great. Fasting in the 90s and pp under 140. Now my numbers are climbing and the awful hunger I felt before has returned. I am suppose to go back to the Dr next week. I am going to ask her to increase my Met. I just did not think Diabetes progressed this quickly for a T2.

Never give in to this stupid disease. Don't let it get the best of you. If you think you need insulin to help, then ask your endo about it. Glad to hear you are back on the wagon. :top:

I'm the queen of denial. Left lower leg gone, half of my right foot, severe neuropathy. I am finally taking this nasty illness seriously. If you have a good doctor, please don't be afraid to talk to him, no matter what concern. I can relate on the weight gain. I was on Actos and holy cow... I had to go off it. It depressed me to keep gaining the weight while I was watching my diet. It almost made me stop what I was working hard at doing. I went to my Dr., and he helped me go off it for now. I finally found a good Dr. who listens to me. Good luck, keep doing what your doing, trying. You can do this. We are here to help.

actually - YOU WIN!!! just think of it this way. your diabetes disorder has given you an early warning sign of what your body likes and what makes it sick!

i think that is a blessing (in disguise).

many are not so fortunate.

Like Joel says : you win :)

Not easy accepting certain foods will make BG climb up the curtains. I LOVE dates! They are healthy, they are not junk food. But just typing the word makes my BG rise...

The very best to you. Here's to being happy and healthy :tee:

Hang in there Schlep! Eating lower carb is difficult at first, esp. if you were a "carb-addict" in your pre-D life (as I was). You'll soon find a lot of "creative" ways to have your favorite foods...that are more carb-friendly (though i've yet to find a low-carb french fry or twinkie;) ).

We're all in this for the long-haul....anything we can do to make our lives longer and healthier...is a good thing!

Just a quick update - I went to my doctor and he wanted to put me on insulin but I told him that I NOW am taking this disease seriously and I think I can control it with diet.

So he gave me 2 months and then I am on insulin if the numbers do not get where they should be.

I have been eating low carb and my numbers this morning were 7.4, I know that is not good enough and I am pushing for lower numbers but it takes time. But it sure is better than 12.

I have come to the conclusion that low carb is not a diet but my new way of life.

It was really hard at the Christmas buffet when all the desserts looked so good but I avoided them.

And will people please stop giving me chocolate and jalepeno jelly

Wish me luck.

I had been counting my carbs religiously for over a year and have now stopped doing it. Instead I have switched to a low GI way of eating. It makes a tremendous difference to my numbers and I don't feel deprived.

For bread I use stone milled whole wheat, but only 1 slice at a time. 1/2 cup oatmeal (large flake), 3 new potatoes, 1/4 c basmati rice or whole wheat pasta are also acceptable. I follow Rick Gallop's GI diet and eat only from his list of green light foods. My dinner plate is half vegetables, and 1 quarter each protein and starch (rice, pasta or potatoes). My BGs are stable - about 4-5 pre-meal and 6-7 post meal. My total carbs for the day are about 120, but as I say I stopped counting after 2 weeks on the low GI diet.

As an added bonus, I have not bolused for 2 weeks - except when I ate high some high GI (Xmas party). The system has also freed me from weighing and counting and I eat all I want from the green light foods (with the exceptions for starch above).
