I am about to move to another level in my diabetes control. After a long period of weighing and recording every bite that goes in my mouth, my before and after BGs 8 times a day, calculating averages, totalling carbs and calories, estimating boluses and obsessing over any foods that are off program, I am going to wean myself off this constant recording. The reason is that I find it stressful. I have also realized that life is about more than numbers, and that we diabetics are also entitled to enjoy life. So I am starting off with every second day. I am stopping weighing food and will simply guesstimate the carbs.

This is my nearly New Year's resolution. So I am going to enjoy partying over Christmas, and will eat what I like in moderation and not go hog wild. Phew! I am relaxed already.

Wish me luck folks.

Micromanaging your diet is something most people cannot do for a very long time. You did it, know your results. I'd say, it may be time to loosen up. Just keep on checking your numbers and see if everything is still within reason. If it is, then fine, if not , see where you can make a small adjustment.
Some people are all or nothing, luckily I am not like that so I've never had great numbers and never really bad numbers. I have my fun stuff and then compensate for it. A day of high numbers do not bother me. A week would.

Your time spent micro-managing will be well worth it. It's better living freely with knowledge of what you are doing than to simply deny you have the D. One thing I try to do every quarter or so is spend a week or two revisiting these things. Control tends to slip further away the longer you spend shooting from the hip.

I agree, there is a real danger that the numbers become an end in themselves. They are only as beneficial as the the use they are put to. And becoming obsessed is never useful. Good luck with your more relaxed style of managing your diabetes ... ;)
