A question re: blurred vision.

I am just wondering, my eyes were very very blurred before i started to control my diabetes, and then they started to improve dramatically when i realised i had it and stopped my bad food and drinking. Anyway, i had 2 really bad days recently, where i went back to my old eating habits, and today my eyes are blurred again!!!

So i guess the question is, if i eat badly again can i expect there to be visible repercussions right away?

It may sound like a silly question, but i am so new to this and i have one million silly questions!!

Yes and no. High blood sugars can cause short term blurred vision. However, as you have experienced this tends to disappear as you control your sugars. Long term highs can unfortunately cause diabetic retinopathy, which is the one you really need to worry about, as it can, if left untreated cause blindness. Your doctor will tell you more about the exciting eye test for this.

I have experienced this type of vision variance as well in the past. The food is probably changing your sugar levels, and that makes your lenses swell and shrink depending on the levels you have. The retinopathy is blood vessels newly developing in the retina that bleed during the development of the veins. This is stopped with retinal laser. If you have your eyes checked by an ophthalmologist they should be able to stop the bleeding before it becomes a problem if and when you ever develop the retinopathy. With good control you can avoid this complication.
Blurriness is simply a common thing with sugar fluctuations.

I've noticed when my b/s are really high, my eyesight gets very very blurry. When it goes back down, my sight goes back to normal. You should have a yearly eye exam, make sure the opthalmologist knows you're diabetic and tell him about the blurred vision episodes, so he's aware. Some docs won't do eye exams unless your b/s is in a more normal range. This is good, because as you're experiencing, b/s can affect eyesight, and if you wear glasses or contacts, it might make a big difference as far as your rx goes.

hi tammy i for a while have had bout's of blurry vision..even after keeping my bs in check sometimes i still do..not oftne even though my bs readings are great ....

I tend to get blurred vision in the morning when my blood sugar can be high. One day last week it was really bad and that was brought on by stress. One important thing to remember if you go for an eye test for new glasses make sure your blood is on the low side or you could end with glasses you don't need or are no good for you.

Yup, me too. When my B/G is running high vision goes bad. The higher the B/G the worse the vision becomes.

I started getting blurred vision back in January, about 6 months before I was diagnosed. I went to the optician, because I thought my eyesight had simply got worse, but he said there was nothing wrong with my vision.

Yes, very possible.

An interesting side-note; Many people get diagnosed with Diabetes at their optician/eye Dr. because of the effect that Diabetes has on one's eyes. As a matter of fact, that's where they Caught me.

New glasses, a month old, and they were "Messing Up", eye Dr. tried all the tests and then, "Lets try this, just to be certain."

Jab finger, blood into Glucose monitor and viola!!1 B/g reading of 550 6 hours after I had eaten anything.
