Hi, I have a friend that is 30 years old now but has been taking insulin shots for the last 11 years and she says she's type 2 diabetic. She is a very skinny person. She also doesn't take any blood test a day to see where her blood sugar is before she takes a shot. She just takes the same amount of insulin everyday she says. She doesn't use alcohol swabs at all to kill germs before giving herself a shot and has been doing this for eleven years now. She said she cann't pay for test strips because she is poor.
Thanks, Rob

She has a very sad type, Rob. There are many people that can't afford test strips and don't even bother to try to figure it all out. She probably hasn't been to the doctor since diagnosis and is on the same insulin regime that she was given when she was diagnosed. She will probably end up with complications eventually. Very sad.

We cannot allow allow ourselves to diagnose but I think your friend should get more medical advice, be it the free kind or otherwise. I would suggest she gets in touch with a good doc who has samples?
If she is a member of this board, I may be able to help her. Get her to pm me.
Heather.

Hi, She not a member on here and doesn't have a computer. She told me a group called helping hands helps her with the shots and insulin. She wants the insulin pens but cann't afford it. She and her boyfriend drink alot of alcohol and they smoke pot and a chain smoker of cigarettes. She did tell me she used pure insulin which she said costs 100.00 a bottle in the past but cann't afford it now.
Thanks, Rob

Well, she needs a lot of help, in many areas then. I would suggest you either get her to a proper help facility or back off frankly. As much as this lady desperately needs help, it just isn't going to happen unless she wants it.
I applaud you for wanting to help her though. You are an inspiration.
Heather.

She wouldn't let me test her BG level. I ownly see her sometimes and not very much. She lives about 230 miles from me in poor part of Tennessee. And she looks like skin and bones. She has said she's been skinny all her life.

Wow :( I feel bad for her. She's in a bad situation but she's doing a lot with drinking and drugs that make it so much worse and more dangerous. Plus... I don't know how much pot costs but I do know how much alcohol can cost. If she were "well" in that particular area, that could be some test strip money.
For those who do not know, as I honestly didn't until a few years ago, there are some astonishingly poor areas in TN and VA. One of our dogs came from an area in south western VA that I'd never been to before we went to pick her up as a puppy. The houses were not even as "nice" as our sheds and there were out houses. Just extreme poverty and not a lot of opportunity.

Ho dear... It's something that makes you want to help and I think by being thin I would think she's type 1.

Yes Jill, I can see where the test strip money is going and sadly here too we have the same attitude. She probably likes being thin and don't like change. :(
I did work for a hospital who has a AA & other dependencies too and it's not a place to witness.

Same here Jill, Like St Kilda and places like that has great coffee houses and many attractions and our once ice skating rink and that was a great place although I learned to skate in Holland. :T So there is some pour folk here.

the key to helping anyone is that they need to want the help in the first place.
if she doesnt want your help you cant force it on her.
i would suggest she is 'skinny' because of her self-abusive life style. (pot/alcohol)
