Remember when I posted this thread about "Carwy and the possibility of Diabetes (http://www.diabetesforums.com/forum/diabetes/21342-carwy-and-possibility-diabetes.html)"? Well, once again, he's experiencing high sugar levels.
I give him heck because with all he's been stuck with, a little lancet poke should be a walk in the park (but, he winces when I have to poke him)! :-
Well, here are the numbers I've been seeing today (after he complained about feeling weak & said his legs felt wobbly):
3:30 PM = 71 (felt weak & wobbly)
6:20 PM = 209 (felt tired)
8:20 PM = 220 (felt tired & thirsty)
When his BG was 71, he ate some snacks that added up to over 60 grams of carbs, so that very likely sent him flying in the other direction. That said, I'm still watching with concern. When his BG was 209, he ate a turkery sandwich (at 35 g of carbs) and that sent him to 220.
I also got a call from his doctor (shortly after his last visit), saying that his TSH is a bit high (at about 5.4), but that the doctor was going to monitor it by testing everything (TSH, T3, T4) next time & start treatment with Levoxyl if anything was off at that time. If the T3 & T4 are fine, the doctor said he'd continue to just monitor the TSH. He said that with localized radiation to the lung area, hypothyroidism does sometimes follow.
Aside from that, I don't know that he checked Carwy's sugar levels, so I'm going to have them check him as soon as possible!! If it is Diabetes, he needs to put it in check before it gets the better of him.
I'm keeping a closer eye on him because he won't watch himself....I'm also extremely likely to bring the cookies his mom made to work tomorrow. :hmpf: With the cookies, it's "out of sight, out of mind!" We don't need that kind of temptation around anyhow.

Dews, I'm certain it was that "turkery sandwich". They always do that. :-)
Seriously, hope it goes better for Carwy. The numbers are not that bad for a D, but if he's not, it is a mite high.
Give him my best wishes, please.

Eeeesh Dewey. I think it is all high time we took Christmas cookies and fudge and threw it out the window. I hope things settle down for Carwy. He is lucky to have you watching out for his well being. Hear that Carwy!!!! Your lucky. ;)

Geez, not this again.
Hope things improve soon, and he's lucky to have you to watch out for him.

Dewey, I would get a endo to do a C-peptide on him anyway and then again the 71 MD/DL as this is to the artificial insulin takers (us) would be the norm but for Carwy, I am getting concerned. :(

You know Dewey, With the TSH may play around with his BG's and what is TSH? Is it anything to do with thyroid?

Aww Dewey, He's not a diabetic just yet. As long that he is still able to stick two fingers in the air with the tongue out at you, He's fine. :T :D

Yes, I will be getting him checked as soon as possible. I don't want this to go unnoticed & thus, unchecked by the doctor(s). In the meantime, I feel very confident to at least keep an eye on him (BG wise, won't babysit him on everything else) and help him when & where possible.
In terms of BGs, I was a little surprised to find his blood sugar elevated AFTER we went skating, as he did not eat anything & was only exercising. :s: Here are the BGs & the notes I took:
Last night:
9:30 PM = 148 (while skating - skating ends at 10:30 PM)
11:00 PM = 220 (after skating)
This morning:
5:20 AM = 157 (woke up to use restroom, had him check)
8:30 AM = 145 (still fasting, nothing eaten since 11:30 PM)
11:15 AM = 132 (just started eating a bowl of cereal)
Thank you all for your input & for the help you've given here.
Is Carwy on steroids? If so it could be steroid induced diabetes. Or is he on any other meds that could cause rised bs?

I'm drug free. The only things I take are Co Q-10 and Ginkgo Biloba

As Carwy said, he's not on anything at this time, other than herbal supplements. He hasn't had chemo, TBI (radiation) or any steroids since 2005.
I will say, history-wise, that his mom is a Type 2, as well as his sister. His grandmother on his mom's side also had Type 2 (according to his knowledge, but he's not certain about that). It could be that his body is following the same footsteps, or maybe it's transplant related? - who knows for sure?
His BG this afternoon was:
4:30 PM = 96 (ate a taco salad)
Previously, he had eaten a bowl of cereal at a reading of 132, but he hadn't checked again until this afternoon. I'd prefer he check his BG before and after meals....if not, I'll be hooking him up to the CGMS (once I get more sensors). :secruity: I'll be checking him more this evening.

Ok, I bloody hate to double-post, but here are his latest readings:
12/27 7:00 PM = 157 (post taco salad)
12/27 10:00 PM = 205 (night time...)
12/28 9:00 AM = 157 (fasting)
12/28 11:20 AM = 143 (cereal w/whole milk)
12/28 2:00 PM = 194 (ate nothing)
12/28 4:30 PM = 158 (turkey tortilla w/cheese & onions)
12/28 7:30 PM = 139 (ate cheddar/sour cream chips w/dip)
12/28 9:12 PM = 129 (chicken broth & one small piece of choc. fudge)
12/29 1:00 AM = 184 (night...)
12/29 11:00 AM = 133 (fasting)
12/29 6:00 PM = 103 (pre-dinner, said he felt shaky as he hadn't eaten all day - I wasn't home most of the day)
12/29 11:30 PM = 200 (night...)
I notice that his evening readings are a pattern of highs (200s) or higher numbers (upper 100s). He doesn't like to be poked, but it's good to keep a check on him. My BG was lower than his this evening (but it wasn't wonderful, at 166). He & I are trying our best to keep track of what he eats & give all the info. to his doctor. I just hope his doctor doesn't get mad at me....it's just that when Carwy complained about feeling weak (after he drove back from Kansas), or complains feeling thirsty (as he's been lately), etc., I worry & want to check him the only way I can.

I'm no expert but if Carwy isn't eating regularly, wouldn't his liver dump glucose like crazy? Just a thought.
I have often found that if I skip a meal and expect to be low, I'll get high instead. Go figure.
Is he carb counting at all Dewey? Have you tried lowering his carbs a bit to see what happens?
Goodness, be well both of you.
Heather.

Thanks, Heather. You have a very good point about his eating habits & style. It could be that the way he's eating or the times at which he's eating that is causing his body to react in these ways.
Ever since he got cancer, I've tried to get him to eat better (of course when he was on chemo, he could only eat what his body was hungry for :s:). In the more recent past (post stem-cell transplant), I've been trying to get him onto more wholesome & organic foods, but to no real avail (unfortunately, it can sometimes be harder to buy them due to price, etc.). Still, I'm trying.
I find that he eats more carbs than he should in one sitting (most of the time). This could indeed cause an issue of not only a post meal spike, but a decline afterward - thus causing a low or low feeling.
I'll continue to keep an eye on him & definitely will give these findings to his doctor.

Dew, you are doing the right thing by keeping an eye on it. Keep checking his bgs whether he likes it or not. Give the results to his doctor and if the doctor doesn't show a concern in any of it, find one who will. We need him to stay around with us. :)

The latest readings easily meet the diagnostic criteria for diabetes.

I totally agree Funny....and the readings I'm about to post also meet the criteria:
12/30 10:50 AM = 148 (fasting)
12/30 2:12 PM = 179 (post lunch - ate cereal w/milk)
12/30 6:15 PM = 157 (pre-dinner)
12/30 9:15 PM = 257 (after eating sushi)
12/30 9:41 PM = 310  (his reading is higher than my post prandial reading, which was 191, then 232!)
I am going to check his ketones just to be safe (on the 310). He's very thirsty, but hasn't had to go to the bathroom yet. Now granted, we ate sushi & some dynamites for dinner (with fish & rice), so I understand that the BGs will be up, but still...No non-diabetic should be 310 at any time.

All of the readings are worrisome Dewey, but that 310 is scary. Time for a visit to the doc. I am sorry! I know this is stressful for you both. :(
