Isometric

Hey there - I'm a 28 yr. old married father of one seriously cute little girl that'll be two in March. I've been diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic since I was 23. The first couple of years went great with just oral medication, then there were a couple of years of steady decline in my control, which led to a scary 12.9 A1c this last Spring. I started Lantus this summer, switched insurance and doctors this fall, after which I started a brief course of 70/30 premix that ended two days ago when I switched back to the Lantus, but this time with Novolog for every meal. I'm tapering off some oral meds, but probably staying with glipizide and metformin.
I ran across this site while I was trying to plan for a movie night tonight, because let's face it - it's not a trip to the theater without the popcorn. Nutritional info is so scattered and varied on the web that it's hard to get a handle on how exactly to count some foods, but I think I've got a pretty good grasp on the count for tonight, thanks in part to a thread on this site devoted to just such a conundrum. :)
I've only recently learned how important it is for me to be in constant communication with friends, family, and my medical team about this disease. Flying solo was a large part of ending up with such a high number, because it's too easy to lie to myself - too easy to ignore what's going on, even when I know it's to my own detriment. My new endocrinologist said it well in our first visit: "The biggest problem I have with treating diabetes is that it causes no pain." Of course, this is only true up to a certain point, but that point is almost too late if serious damage has already been done. So I joined up here, looking for encouragement and support, but more importantly, hoping to give encouragement and support to others who share this road.
Looking forward to being a part of the conversation here!
