Hi,

I wonder if I could throw out a general question about "dawn phenomenon." Can you tell me what it feels like? Does it awaken you from a sleep with a "surging" or "rushing" feeling.
Thanks,

Jane

The DP has caused me to wake up with a full bladder and/or a dry mouth. I have not been aware of a "surging" or "rushing" feeling.

Nope.

I don't consider myself a morning person. I feel skuggish and dopey. I rarely wake wide eyed and bushy tailed. It's my hypothesis that us night owls have big DPs.

When I experience this I usually wake up in a "night sweat". If I get up and move around a little it goes away and I can go back to sleep.

Generally DP is when you first wake from sleep and you feel groggy from your sleep, From that point your body is screaming for glucose and so your liver provides it.
When you are asleep the Blood Pressure drops enough to slow down the glucose production from your liver.

I routinely wake to too high numbers despite good numbers before I go to sleep. On the few times I woke with good numbers (130's), I felt no different until after I tested -- then I felt happy :D

I think Blue Sky Gave the most accurate description I could relate to. I thought at first I was snoring or breathing through my mouth while sleeping. My wife confirmed that I had not snored and that I could be symtomatic of DP. She is a nurse...So I listen to her...Most of the time...OK, Maybe not as much as I should...Alright already!!!!!!

When I had an out of control DP (would go to bed in the 6s, be 6 at 3:00 a.m., and then wake up in the 12-15 range) I would wake up feeling groggy and cranky and like I hadn't gotten a good night's sleep at all. Now that it's controlled and I can go to bed at 5 and wake up at 5, I feel way more energic and can "leap out of bed" and start getting ready for work right away, rather than taking half an hour just to wake up.

Sometimes I'll wake up in the early morning with a slightly elevated bg and I'll be drenched in sweat. I am anxiously awaiting an accurate CGMS...

I have very strong DP, but I have my pump set to offset it. Sometimes better than others.

After Cyborg explained to me what DP was I determined that it has definitely happened to me on many occasions, and I agree its pretty darn frustrating!

Does anyone know tricks for reducing or eliminating DP? Like getting a good solid night of sleep (without waking up for nothing), or maybe having a sleeping schedule, or taking something medicinal??

This is a great thread by the way! I need to start visiting this forum much more often, I'm not online here nearly enough to appreciate and share all this fantastic information...!

I was only reading about this yesterday on David Mendosa's site, Diabetes Directory (http://www.mendosa.com/diabetes.htm), according to him some people have found that eating a green apple just before sleep can reduce the effects of DP.

I don't get any of the symptoms mentioned above, but have found that my numbers can be higher in the morning than they were the night before (8-9 hours earlier). There was only a small raise this morning. 5.9mmol/L at 11pm last night and 6.1mmol/L at 8:30am today.

Before I was DX'ed I was getting the really dry mouth and also thought it was due to snoring (which my wife says I only do when I have a cold).

The only effective way I've found is to go on an insulin pump so I can match my basal insulin to it. I believe some type 2's take their metformin before bed or take the extended metformin, not sure on these.
