Hello everyone...just introducing myself to all you nice folks...and wishing everyone a Great '08!!!
You can call me SloeWyne, Sloe or Sheryl - I'll answer to all...:)
About me: I'm a Type 1 (since age 33, and I'm now 50), who has had a dramatic wakeup call - in September, I had my fourth toe on my right foot amputated because of osteomyelitis (a bone infection) - that I only noticed when I woke up one morning and had a hole in my toe! Immediately went to the hospital, and they told me I'd be losing it. And I did...I lost it COMPLETELY (meaning I got hysterical)! Never felt any pain or ANYTHING because my neuropathy is so advanced. :frown:
Anyway, I'm dealing with it, and it's nearly healed...but it has caused me to be a WARRIOR about checking my feet (and my blood sugar levels)! I have also vowed to change my eating habits, but that's easier said than done (I'm a bread fiend.)
I'm looking forward to sharing with you all, and learning what your experiences have been - and how you've dealt with what I call "this **** diabetes thing"!
All the best for the New Year! :D

Hi Sheryl and welcome to Diabetes Forums. We seem to have a lot in common. I was also diagnosed type one in my early thirties and have had diabetes for 21 years. You do the math... ;) I also love photography.
I am sorry for your foot trouble, but glad you have decided to take control of your diabetes.
Welcome to DF. Glad your here!

Hey.. welcome from another newbie. Sorry to hear about your toe. I dread anything like that, and can understand how it might make one feel.
I didnt know you could be type 1 and find out in your 30s.. I am 32 and just found out, and I assumed that type 1 is from birth and type 2 is acquired later in life. Is that true..? Whats the difference..?
Hope you have a happy new year..!! Great time for some new resolutions to change ones lifestyle..

Hi SamDavid...thanks for the welcome!
Actually, my diabetes is secondary to a pancreatic condition...my pancreas quit working, quit producing insulin, and VOILA...
So mine is a little different than the normal Type 1...
As for my toe being amputated, it happened so quickly (emergency room on 9/22, surgery on 9/24) that I had NO time to really process it until afterwards...and by then it was like, "OK - so where do we go from here?" Can't grow it back...LOL!
Look forward to conversing wit'cha...

what color is the bread? If it's white then that will give you BG's a rise.

Welcome aboard, Sheryl. There is a lot of information already here on the forums about the differences between types 1 and 2, and their specific causes (well, guesses at most of them anyway, since there really is no 'one' cause), so just have a look around. :)

Hi and welcome to the board! Glad to have you here. :D
Sorry to hear about your toe. That sucks. :( So far I have no neuropathy, knock on wood, but I'm almost expecting it because I do have foot problems (had a neuroma removed 10 years ago and constant ingrown nails).
Again, glad to have you here. :D
