Lab ever screw you?

On December 17th, I went for my A1c test and didn't get the results back until Dec 28th. Guess what? All for naught! The lab didn't do an A1c test on the blood, just a regular glucose test!

I'm extremely annoyed, having to pay for a test that didn't get done right by the lab.

Frustrating. Just go back and get it done again at their expense. Good reason to always follow up. Good for you.

That sucks. Was the proper box checked on the form you gave them? If so, I'd walk back in and have them redo it free of charge. I've never had a lab do less tests, usually I get extra tests thrown in.

I always look over the paperwork from My M.D. before I hand it over to the lab tech. At at least know if the correct test has been ordered. And my MD has not made any ordering mistakes so far. Whoever made the mistake should pay the cost--not you.

It gets worse. I gave another blood sample last Thursday and the results came back today. ANOTHER SCREW UP! Apparently the blood was put in a vial with the wrong color covering on it.
The lab was anal about it and refused to do a A1c test on the blood.

One, why did it take a week before I was notified?
Two, what is the big deal what color top is placed on the vial.

I am extremely p'oed about this.

The different color stoppers on the empty vials mean the vials have different additives depending on what test is needed. It is important. Seems like you need a new lab. :(

I don't get it. You mean when they draw a sample into a vial, a certain color vial is necessary for an A1c test as opposed to a regualr glucose screening?

Yes different viles are used for different things. I notcied this last time I had my draws Not only were several different viles used but she told me what each one was for and there was a different vile for both my glucose and the A1c ;) Either way your lab sounds like something I wouldnt choose to go back to . Good luck !

Yes. the stoppers are different colors because some vials contain various preservatives or other agents. A1C is always done in a lavender, or "lav". What you want to hear when you get bloodwork is "two reds and a lav". That is a full workup.
