My cat just deleted my story so here I go again. Sat. decided to do basal test. 98 at bedtime, no snack, 8u Lantus. At 3:20am-67 and breakfast Sun. 74. Lunch was 94 and 2PP 161. I treadmilled 1 hr 4-5pm and ate dinner at 6 (35carbs). At bedtime I tested 63 so had yoplait with frozen blueberries and a couple LC peanut butter cookies (35carbs). At 11pm-87 so skipped Lantus and went to bed. I woke up at 6:30 with a headache so tested-52. Went back to bed after 1/2c OJ and breakfast was 74 (35 carbs). Now 2hr later 145. Where did the glitch come? Exercise or not enough carbs? I know I could have caught the low after exercise but I was trying to cut back on testing to one meal pre and post and bedtime. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Hard to say...but why are you "skipping Lantus" just because you had a good meter reading? It is not a mealtime insulin...it is for baseline not including meals.
My guess is that you had enough Lantus still in your system that it kept you low (you are having lows) then you rose back to 145.
Your numbers look good...but not sure how you are using Lantus in your management.

I skipped the Lantus because Dr. said to have snack if bedtime was under 100. I had already had 35 carbs at 10 and didn't want to go low during the night, which I did anyway. I know Lantus is a basal and I only take it at bedtime. I hate to think what that 6:30am number would have been if I had taken the Lantus. Guess I'm just trying to figure it all out like everyone else. Thanks

It's hard to follow. On day one did you have breakfast and lunch? Basal testing should be for limited time periods only, say up to 6 or 8 hrs or overnight. The overnights and mornings were actually pretty good. I agree with the doc about the food before bed. You should have had a bit more to get it up. Skipping the Lantus is wrong as it lasts 24hrs or so. By the time it kicks in, your whole situation has changed, and you risked going high the following day, all day. You are still producing insulin, and your body found a way to compensate. I doubt it can do that for long or you wouldn't have been prescribed the Lantus.

Hi, yes I did the basal testing overnight Saturday. That was the98 at bedtime, 67 at 3:20am and the 74 at breakfast. Yes those weren't too bad. The freakout part was the 52 at 6:30am on Sunday. Maybe the exercise benefit lasted a lot longer than expected!! Thanks for the reply.

Once the eating and exercise come into play, all bets are off for the basal testing.
