Hello,
Male 50yo Type 1 for 49ish years (coma at 8 months old), last A1C was 6.9.
I have been on Lantus (17 units at bedtime) now for a year or so. I am suddenly having problems with low bg levels in the middle of the night. My question is does Lantus have to be taken at bedtime? Since it is a "24hour" dose can it be given at any time of day? Or what bedtime snack do you eat to prevent this? I also take Humalog at meals.
Thanks
Dave

I'm in the same boat as Linda. Welcome to the forums, hopefully a T1 should be available soon. If no one answers your question in a timely manner, try reposting it in the Type 1 forum.

Welcome Dave.
Some take it at night, some in the mornings, and many do both to compensate for shorter than expected effectiveness. I'm not sure that any will help dropping in the night, but users will have to chime in on that one. The night drop combined with a high DP are very difficult to tackle.
Pumping is the best way to treat the basal hills and valleys. I can now stay stable any time of day when I don't eat. Check it out.

Hi, and welcome.
You can take lantus whenever you want. A lot of people take it in the morning to prevent the nightime lows. I take it 2x a day because of the lows. (my total dose is split) I time the am injection so that the low occurs around lunchtime, and I take less humalog for my meal to compensate.

I take my Lantus in the mornings. Much better daytime readings (pre-meal) and fewer lows at night. Having said that, I'm so fine-tuned right now, that I normally eat about 15-25 carbs at bedtime for a little "padding"...unless I've had a high carb meal such as pasta, pizza that breaks down slowly.
There is no reason Lantus must be taken at night. I think the original thinking (which is flawed) is that the initial 4-hour start-up of Lantus would occur while we are sleeping. That's a bad time for an engine to be revving up, IMHO.
Many people take it in the morning. Try to take it same time, I'm about 7 a.m with it...If you continue to have lows, cut back just one unit. See if you are ok before meals.

Thanks to all for the info. This problem has come out of left field. I have been slowly dropping the Lantus dose and for that mater the Humalog dose too. Now with things semi stable I will pick a weekend and swap to an AM Lantus injection. I'm assuming the best thing would be to keep the current dose and monitor closely for problems for a good while. I'm also considering the Bernstein diet. Any coments are welcome

Hi Dave and Welcome.
When I was on Lantus, I was taking mine in the am because of overnight lows. You may want to try that first. If all else fails, go to a split dose. I tried that for a while too.

go to a split dose. I tried that for a while too.
I would split the doses and take the injections 12 hours appart from each other.
And welcome to DF Dave. :D
