Has anyone here been on glipizide or other sulfonlylureas for five years or more?

I'd be interested in hearing how you've managed since going on glipizide and whether you are also taking any kind of insulin. Do you find it hard to co-ordinate the two, since the effects of glipizide can be a little uneven? What kinds of A1Cs have you seen over the years?

I've been taking glipizide for over 18 years, with one break when I first started insulin about 10 years ago.

My BGs have always been of the yo-yo variety, without regard to the drug or drugs I'm taking at the time.

I suppose my A1c readings have been very stable, all things considered. The first I recall was 6.9, about 16 years ago. Since then, it has ranged from 6.7 to 7.5, usually hovering around the 7.0 level. The last A1c was 7.2, but I am due for another test this week.

I was on it for about 10 years before my response started failing. I was pulled off it when I started insulin. I was told most folks only last about 5 or so years before failure.

Glipizide was the first and has been continuous for 12 years. I have had all the other pills added to it andtaken away. Now I am on Glip and Lantus. Dr. said he may drop the Glipizide later.
