This is perhaps a bit off piste..but..

I'm off to visit French Guiana in end of this month and are looking at taking malaria prophylaxis.
It wont be for a long period, 10 days maximum, and I will ofcourse consult my Doctor with this, as I do have some complications with eyes and kidneys (I'm on Enalapril and Lasix).

Though, would be real interested in hearing from anyone who have any experience of this and if your Doctors pointed out anything in particular to keep in mind part from the usual?

I am very aware that malaria prophylaxis really dont go well with some of the Diabetes issues one might have but malaria itself does not go well with anyone :thumpdown

I took Malarone while in Africa. I had absolutely no issues with it at all. Came home malaria free. :D

A few insurance companies will not cover malarone as it is fairly new and expensive. Some of the other malaria medications will cause some severe side effects. Go to Travelers' Health | CDC (http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/default.aspx) and read about recommended malaria medications for the area of travel.

Thanks Notme!

Malarone was the one I was looking at first hand, or anything besides Lariam :D
Malarone seems like its OK even for resistant areas :top:

There are several malaria meds that good. I'm sure your insurance will cover one of them. I travel a lot myself and have tried many different meds. All of them seem to work as I do not have malaria.
Have a good trip and take lots of photos to show us.

Heather.

Thanks!

I live in Sweden so Malaria meds, no matter what I get, I will probably have to pay for it myself.
Honestly though.. I'm more scared of the venomous snakes and spiders sneaking around in the South American jungle
I will try take some good photos too!
