Glad you found us - if you've got any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask! When I was diagnosed T2, I got a prescription for glucophage and next to nothing for advice or counsel from my doctor at the time. It can be pretty intimidating if you don't know what, exactly, it is that you're fighting. Sign up for classes with a certified diabetes educator if you haven't already and learn all you can. Knowing what the big D is, and especially what it isn't is the best foundation to build your treatment on. Good luck and see you around!

Hi Cowboy,

Welcome to the forum, it's a fantastic place, full of caring supportive people. I found it when I was diagnosed at the end of November last year and have found it to be invaluable in helping me.

When I joined, Princess Linda, recommended that I buy the book by Gretchen Becker called "The first year - Type 2 Diabetes", so I would like to pass on the same advise to you. It's a great book and really easy to read.

As I was also told here on the forum, "you control your diabetes it does not control you", this is my mantra.

I know that being diagnosed can be a shock, you will run through a whole series of emotions, it's normal, the things is to come out fighting afterwards. Being diagnosed probably saved my life as I was certainly heading for a heart attack, now I losing weight and feel better than I have for literaly years.

Visit & post often and best of luck.

Hey Cowboy, welcome! Glad you found the forums. To me, it really made me realize that I was not alone in trying to control my diabetes. Come here often, read and ask lots of questions, you'll find things get easier as time passes.

I think the most valuable advice I received when I first found the forum was "Test, test, test." If you test your blood sugar regularly, esp. 2 hrs after the first bite of food, you'll learn how different foods affect your blood sugar, and be able to make smarter food choices. What works for one may not work for another, so you have to find your individual tolerances.

When first diagnosed, I kept a food journal, listing each bite I put in my mouth throughout the day, and corresponding blood sugars. After a few weeks, I had a lot of meals I knew were good for me and didn't cause my blood sugar to elevate.

Many of us on the forum watch our carbs. Foods like potatoes, white rice, white bread and pasta can cause the blood sugar to spike. Also, any exercise you can do will be helpful.

Read the book Dave recommended...its a good one.

I know you probably feel overwhelmed right now, but in a little while, this will become just a part of your life. Hang in there. Hope to see you posting often.
