Hi, I'm going to try to lose my weight from 197 lbs to what my doctors have been telling me to do for last few years by reducing my weight down to 160. I hope this will let me stop taking shots and just some pills. I have a uncle that is 81 years old that takes a small diabetic pill a day because he has been walking a mile or more everyday for last 30 years. He has never taken shots. He is a type 2 diabetic.

Thanks, Rob

There's no doubt that maintaining a healthy weight helps in controlling type 2 diabetes. Whether or not it will allow you to stop taking insulin (if that's what you mean by "shots") is another matter. Hopefully it will.

For myself, I disagree with the All part. For you, I hope your right.

Hi -- Rob !!

Type 2 diabetes is all about weight?

I'm sorry Rob, don't share your view, " all about weight " there is much more to it than loosing weight, course, weight loss is a contributing factor, a Doctor once said to me, once a diabetic, you'll have it for life, I'm not going to play the endocrinologist to you, may I suggest, try Googling Diabetes Advocacy, there's so much you can learn, don't get stuck in this negative vein, about "weight loss", be more positive and read more of this dreadful disease we bear, ask more questions on the forum, these guys on here are marvelous on giving good advice, all for now Rob hope I didn't offend.

Must respectfully disagree Rob. I'm certainly not obese, or even fat. My BMI is near ideal, although the distribution is far from perfect.

My late uncle was T 2, and he was skin and bones his entire life. Never had an ounce of fat on his body.

Hi, If losing weight doesn't work then why did my aunt which had a weight of 350 lbs and lost 200 lbs in weight watcher class get off of her insulin twice a day and some of her pills? I have another person that lost weight and she doesn't take her insulin shots any more also. She is 74 years old. These people will always have diabetes but keeping the weight off they will not need insulin shot anymore. I've had 5 doctors in the last four years that have told me if the weight comes off the chances are good I will not need insulin shots.

I don't think anyone here is saying that you will definitely not be able to stop taking insulin if you lose weight. It's just that the fact is that some people with type 2 can get to a normal weight and still need insulin. There are other factors involved besides excess weight. This is why those doctors use the phrase "chances are good" and not a word like "definitely".

Type 2 Diabetes is NOT just about weight. Loosing weight can only help and more than with just your diabetes. However, as I understand it, it is a progressive disease. If you currently have Type 2 and loose weight and get off meds, as it's progressive, if you live long enough, I'd think it's likely you will eventually have problems again with Type 2.

Insulin resistance, same as most of us.
